Thread: Is this an abuse of power or justified?

I am mayor of a four guild metropolis on naboo. We have many new players that come to our city to run missions and learn about the game in general. Over all we have a very good group of people, willing to help newbies 'learn the ropes'.

Recently a splinter guild from one of our founding PA's planted a pa hall just north of the city to 'be part of the city and maintain good relations with our previous PA'. The problem I have been having with them is that this new group seems to be made up of mostly the "L337 haxor" group of players.

They have admitted to using exploits, bugs and anything that can get them an advantage in the game. That's all well and good, if that's the way they want to play. My issue with them is that while they are in the city, they discuss exploits, and openly use racial slurs.

I am not the only one within the city to ask them to refrain from this sort of behavior. And after being repeatedly told that "it's just a game, I'lll play how I want" I finally gave the guy his final warning. No more racial slurs in spatial keep it in your guild or tells, I DO NOT want to see it. Well our little friend chose to test me on it and continued his use of phrases I and others had ask them to refrain from. So I /citybanned him. He went off on a rant claming it an abuse of power and that he will insure that I am voted out of office and his guild will take over the city.

Now this is one of the leaders of this new PA acting this way. He has since apologized to one citizen and said he will abide by the city rules. This citizen told him to contact me, andI have not heard from this guy yet.

I feel under the circumstances that a cityban is justified and until he and his guild can act in a mature manner, and use appropriate language that I do not need to pardon him.

How do you handle players like this, and should he be pardoned at all? I have NO tolerance at all for discrimination of any sort, and will not put up with people using racial slurs. I and others within the cityfeel that it leaves a bad impression of our city and the people that live there, especially when it is happening around new players that don't know us.

I think you handled it pretty well.

I think you were justified in banning him, but I would take it a step further.

Email your citizens, make them aware of the problem and request he (and his guild mates) be banned from every structure in the city.

Do not even allow them to purchase goods from ANY vendor there.

If they can't use your facilities and they can't shop there, they may eventually move on.

Don't fall for the "apology" trick from someone with this attitude - in my experience such behavior has underlying character flaws and/or maturity problems. Something you'd have a hard time fixing in real life let alone in a virtual game environment.

If the guy(s) were using real life racial slurs then dont mess around with in game bans, contact a customer service representative and give him full details including a log if you have one. If they are continuing to use these racial slurs then go near them and log the chat so you have proof. Bear in mind that racial discrimination is a crime in many countries and I am damn sure that Sonys CSRs will not tolerate it.

If by racial slurs you just mean 'DamnI hateWookies!' then please ignore the above.

I think your justified and I agree with other comments as well. I have had to ban 1 person from my city for some like this, and did pretty much the same thing. Banned then and then sent e-mail to everyone in the city letting them know why. He soon picked up his stuff and left, guess he could bring himself to appologize. But anyway.. you did the right thing.

I fully agree with Ewach.

I had a similar issue with a former member of my PA and the "it's just a game" attitude, regardless of how much his actions hurt others. I booted him then sent everyone a letter explaining the situation. We banned him from everything we could and he did not stay in town long despite claiming he would.

No one argued or had a problem with it.

Don't forget /report. If they were using RL racial slurs, discussing exploits and getting multiple reports on them, it will eventually get handled by CSRs. (Don't try to second guess when though; it'll drive you crazy.)

Also, try to make a chat log of anything you feel is a violation of the SOE TOS and use /report to communicate to the CSRs about someone using racially slurs or other vulgar language continuously.

CSR's will not accept screenshots nor logs since they can be altered. They will accept /report. Do a ticket on it and mention that you submitted a report on the player name so they can locate it.

You did not abuse power at all. There is no room for racial slurs here. Good job!

firstly let me start by saying this is not a random problem and it plagues the game. i think you handled the situation superbly, but you should take it further by reporting him to SOE or however it is that controls the banning of cheaters.

this type of behaviour should not be tolerated as people of all ages and race play this game..don't let them get away with it!!!

Howdy

I would just report him to the CSR's for the exploits and the racial slurs...Why even waste your time with this person..

I think you handled it well. I'm for keeping it out of the CSR's hands as long as possible, so what you did was fine - and with fair warning. Don't back down - it's what makes wearing the Mayor's Robe difficult at times (that and the chaffing!).

Glad to see I'm not the only one who feels this way. I do tend to be a bit hasty and over-harsh in my judgements. Especially with individuals who I have no respect for.

I have banned him from the three shop structures I have admin on, so he now has no access to the vehicle, weaponsmith, chef or spice vendors within the city, Nor does he have access to the mall and it's vendors. I will be sending a citizen email informing the populace of what is going on and asking that he be banned from the cantina, med center and other shops as well.

I will also request that the medics and entertainers within the city refrain from healing him. I don't feel his whole guild should be punished just yet.. until they show their true colors they are innocent in this. But they will be watched very closely when they are within the city.

Thanks for the support.
