Thread: Player City Populations

Some of us on the Merchant board were discussing player cities and how for merchants they were not ideal unless they were suburbs of Static cities. During this discussion I realized something that I supposed I had noticed but hadn't thought about. These are just my observations, mind you, and I'm not as well travelled since player cities were released as I used to be. But here goes.

Player Cities are very empty. Of people I mean. At first I was disheartened because I thought it was just Agrilatia, my town. Then, as I went on several escapades around Corellia looking for goods and hitting the vendors I noticed it wasn't just us. My vendor and bazaar hopping showed me something else as well. Just about EVERY city except for Coronet is empty. In fact if I were to give rough and dirty statistics I'd say that at just about any time of day you can find probably 75% of Corellia's online population is hanging out in Coronet, in the hospital, in the cantina (usually AFK dancing) or in the starport shouting for stuff, duelling, or getting missions. Probably another 10% hanging around Tyrena for some reason, and 5% in the wilds hunting (and probably on their way to Coronet at some point) 3 percent in other Starports getting closer to this vendor or that mission, and the rest in player cities, loading vendors, crafting, taking care of miscellaneous business. This is, I admit one planet on one server. But "Spamming at Coronet" is, at least among all the smugglers, the thing to do. Not spamming at just ANY starport but Coronet more than others. I don't know where everyone is on Tattooine, but I know they aren't in Mos Eisley (I'd guess at Anchorhead, personally) and not in Player Cities.

So, am I wrong? What are heaviest populations in an average day in your Cities, politicians? If they are noticeably heavier for special events, please include this information as well. I'd like to hear what numbers you guys who know more about this come up with. If I'm right I have a theory why, but that's another post. So let's hear it. Oh and if you also know the population patterns for the static cities on your planets, please feel free to post that info as well. I'd like to hear it.

I agree that cities are devoid of live people most of the time, however, they are visited frequently for people to hit vendors.

There isn't that much for people to do in a town. You can shop, you craft if you are a crafter. You can hang out as a doc or entertainer, but knowing that most people go to adventure planets what is the point of being in town? Whenever I need a buff, I plan on going through coronet since I know a Dr will be around. However, when I want to shop I will visit towns and know that goods are available despite a live player not being there to sell them to me.

Only in strong PVP towns with a ton of bases will you see a lot of folks. Also Twin Suns being the gateway to Jabbas themepark seems to have good traffic as well.

I am disappointed that my cantina isn't more full, but think about it, why would people spend time in towns?

Well that was a point I was going to get to in another post. I have some ideas about that both in the Why and in the What to do.

So how populated is your city? When is it the most busy? Is it EVER busy? I'd like to know even if the answer is "it isn't". I think it's something we should start talking about.

I've used a ranger to take surveys of my city to try and develop patterns.

We are an Imperial City on Tatooine with a current count of 147 active player/citizens and 6 inactive ones.

There is an extensive suburb system around out city.

As near as we can tell our city averages about 20 people on and in the city as a low figure throughout the day. During base V times that number increases to about 40-50.

Special events in Veris have numbered over 300 and caused server crashed. So we rarely host special events.

We have two basic areas where people congregate. Crafter's Row (you can figure that one out) and our Cantina/Town Hall area.

Our cantina holds 5 vendors. 2 food, 2 med and a general bazaar type vendor for big ticket items that citizens need to move.

Our town hall hosts a crafting room on the right with high end crafting stations and it's where alot of our grinders hang out. On the left is the Mayors office where we conduct planning for the prosecution of the GCW.

In our servers prime time hours Veris's town center averages about 50 live bodies.

The fewest number of people I've ever seen in our town was 5 people.

Hope that helps.

So would you attribute that to the factional allignment of your city? Or the base itself? Or just to the outright merits of your city?

Well, basically, you can do two things in a city:

  • Craft. In that case, the guy is probably inside, near his station.

  • Go someplace else to mine/adventure/explore/PvP/Earn money/do themeparks etc.

95% of the game content is someplace else, so people go someplace else.

When we had a faction base complex next to town, that increased population. PVP and destroying bases brings in a lot of people.

Mos Tyrenia Population 97 residents

Typical traffic

5-10residents online in town, crafting, stocking vendors, 1 or 2 afk entertainers in cantina

5-10 shoppers/passersby in town. We are right next to the Krayt Graveyard so we get a lot of people coming through looking for Krayts. When the shuttle lands there will be groups, the check the vendor then move on.

I am surprised if I ever see more than 10 folks actually hangingaround town.

I am trying to get some more bases placed to encourage folks to hang out, but without a large commitment to defend them, people see it as a waste of money to put them up, only to be destroyed in a month or less.

So another thing keeping your towns from being ghost towns is community...ok cool. See this is good stuff, good to hear. Please continue.

Howdy

The city of Villa Sura on Naboo usually has some folks in town at any given time.Sometimes people are their houses so it is hard to tell if anyone is around. We get visitors and such but mostly the folks of the city like to gatherthere and then go out and do missions and stuff. We are dead center on Naboo so there are no POI's around which was our choice when we set up the city last July. We do have a permanent Imp spawn behind city hall which we didnt know was there when we placed city hall but it has really been alot of fun shooting these guys...LOL

I think the key for us is that we are all friends. Everyone knows each other...We are at 74 citizens.Originally the city was a mix of HT Guild and other players...However, most have asked/joined our guild now. The Guild Chat feature is awesome....We have always kept the city aninvite only which I think has really strengthed the relationship and fun of all. There is never a time that something isnt going on.Also alot of out of gameinformation and joking aroundtakes place on our forums.I personally think the forums are an important extension of the game. Finally, the other thing is that we are an adult only city.

Im sure most would agree that a shuttle is pretty important to have....With out one it would seem logical that many cities appear to be ghost towns especially if the are far away from a shuttle or static city.

Hope that helps

Happy Trails

Well, many of the ghost town's I've seen HAVE shuttles (that's how I got their ) so I didn't think it was a services thing.

We've got a small sampling so far that seems to suggest it's not quite as widespread as I thought, but I'd really like to hear from more people on this.

Desert Flower Commune is only 67, but since we've acquired a shuttleport, we have been seeing a steady growth (not bad for a second generation city).

I think player cities are dependent strongly of when people are on. I know in the mornings, our town is dead. So I use that time to visit the starting cities or grabbing someone in the commune and running a few quests together. Evenings, we have people coming in and out and generally most of the residents hang out in the city hall (we have crafting stations there), at the cantina or at the community fire pit. Last night, one-fifth of the residents were in town doing a variety of tasks or just talking.

I've been to several player cities and change the time in which to visit them. Some are busier at different times and others are constantly dead. I haven't seen a player city that is constantly busy everytime I've passed through.

The population for our city on Tatooine, Helios, has hovered between 120-125 since the first of the year. It's always very active in the evenings - groups meeting at the cantina to go hunting on Dant, Dath, or Yavin, or the crafters getting together to socialize while they craft. We're nearby (2200m)to Anchorhead, which is a ghost town these days, as is Espa, Ethna, and Eisley. Bestine isn't quite as bad, but it couldn't be called a buslting social center.

In any case, we built Helios to be a center for crafters and vendors. We're neutral, and don't allow any factional confrontations in town. We've worked very hard to build a reputation as the place to meet and shop. We're busiest in the evenings, but we see steady traffic all throughout the day from out of town shoppers.

What's funniest of all are all the Reb guilds that don't want our 'Imp guild' members in their town, and all the Imp guilds that don't want our "Reb guild' members in their town, but they all come shop in Helios. And that suits us just fine.
