Seriously though, from what I understand, a politician can just take money straight out of the coffers - it just notifies all your city residents when you do. So as long as everyone is comfortable with you setting a salary for yourself, there should be no problems.
There should be a percentage that the Mayor gets. The more profitable the city the more he/she makes. This would motivate a Mayor to get out there and advertise the city to get people to move in and for people to sell stuff.
Since the position is a weekly thing, what better way to create some competition when it comes to vote time.
I have been the mayor of our pre-patch city since mid-july. Run the city well and trust me, money won't be a problem -- the citizens will take care of you.

you guys need to treat this like a real politician, skim and bribes man this is our bread and butter while we're at it add alittle extorsion maybe some blackmail and who need missions just sit in the cantina, get drunk watch the grrls 
If being a politition is your main funtion, which I think it will take a huge chunk of time.
I think you could probably talk to/make a poll, and ask citizens if you can have a small cut to compensate you for all the effort your making. Then you could just take your fee out of the treasury every week.
Besides if the citizens don't like it..they will vote you out of office, if they don't vote you out...obviously you aren't upsetting them by taking it.
