Alright, heres the thing. I hope Plinka reads this and tells me whether its a bug or something else. Recently I have enabled zoning rights in my city. It started off good, then some weird things have started happening.

The members of my militia are not able to build when they please. The city zoning seems to prevent this, no matter. They can just grant themselves the zoning rights. For some weird reason this doesnt happen. The militia cannot grant themselves zoning rights. So being the kind mayor I am I show up to grant the member of the militia zoning rights but then I get this weird message saying that "only the mayor or members of the militia may grant zoning rights."

The thing is Im both mayor and a member of the militia. I ended up having to turn off zoning rights completely

Couple of things,

Firstly the error message for the mayor not being able to grant zoning rights is incorrect. Its probably because of another reason. Make sure you are standing (not sitting or mounted), and that you are outside, and that you are inside the city limits. Make sure the person you are trying to grant rights to is also outside (within the city).

Secondly, Militia are not able to grant themselves zoning rights or place buildings themselves, that is a power of the mayor. Militia can only grant the rights to others.

I'm a mayor/militia member myself, I have no problems placing houses or granting to others (while following the above guildlines).

I was outside, I wasnt mounted, and I was standing in plain view of the person I wanted to grant the rights to.

Personally I think its absurd that militia members cannot grant themselves zoning rights. They can grant it to everyone but themselves. Personally I think its something that should be fixed. The mayor obviously trusts them to not go crazy, thats why he/she made them militia members in the first place.

I agree with you, but then I also believe the whole Militia thing was FUBAR from the start. It really needed to be developed more and fleshed out. In its current state they are glorified city planners, with a couple of powers that they didn't think through and now have to remove.

I basically call the current militia 'Deputy Mayors' because that is what they are. If they had the ability to place decorations you could call them Mayors. Its a stupid system, one that really needs looking into.

They need to seperate the zoning into a different group of people (that can place structures themselves), and also give them the banning, but maybe not the pardon(this is the assistant mayor role, and the pardon might need to be a mayor only thing). Then take whatever military powers you want and give that to the militia.
