I am currently mayor of a rank 4 Research center. We have around 70 residents.I would like to surrender my mayorship to another candidate who is running for the election. I need help with two things:
1.) What will happen if I surrender my politician skills while the other candidate is running for the election?
2.) What will happen ifI surrender my politician skills while no one is currently running for election?
Thanks for any help...

1) You will remain mayor until you lose the election. You simply won't have any skills to do anything with your city.

You will be mayor no matter what as long as the city has money and has people. i droped poli about 2 months ago now i still won the elections got the XP I even picked poli up 3 or 4 times since just cause i needed a trainer lol
but you will always remain mayor you can pull money change name but thats about it you can't magae taxes or anything.

Howdy all
Im really tempted to do the same thing. Ive dropped everything but Novice....The only concern is this is a bug. If the Devs ever really figured this out they could do a patch and "Poof".....
I am tempted though...sure would like my 15sp back...

One question I thought of, sorry if its already been discussed, was what would happen to my City if I totally dropped Politician? Would I still be the Mayor or will I be removed?
Also, with the new patch alterations to Polly, do u have to have the Novice Politician skill to be able to run?

The way it used to work (pre-patch 11.2) was that you could drop politician altogether and remain mayor until voted out of office (like that would ever of happened
).
Since 11.2 was released though, my understanding is that to continue as Mayor you need to re-register every voting cycle otherwise a system generated NPC mayor will take over (in the event that is if no one else regsiters to run). To register though, you seem to require the Novice Politician skill - as does anyone wishing to challenge you for the role.
With xp now so hard to attain and the risk of loosing control, I haven't been willing to try this out without incurring "angry mob syndrome" from the residents.
