Thread: Why Do People Build Player Cities Near Other Cities
I definitely agree with you, most cities on the planets are just there with no real purpose. The only reason a person would come to a player city (if they are not a citizen of it) is if there was a master crafter there that was very popular or if there was some sort of attraction there.
That is why so many cities are outpost because there is just nothing there to catch someone's eye. Only the cities near the jedi caves, Kryat field or near rebel/imperial bases are worth noticing, in my opinion.
I couldn't agree more . . . our city is about 2200 from Lake, but 5500 from Theed, so we have access to a shuttleport but not a cloning facility. As a result we are in no rush to grow . . . we will finally hit village this weekend if our city hall doesn't disappear to drift. Our major draw? Atmosphere. We're the only RP city on the planet. Even though we have few ammenities, we are proud to say that people do travel from planets away to visit us.
However, whenever I ride from Theed to Tombra I always pass right through an enormous and very very annoying town that's in my travel path. Theit shuttleport is LITERALLY within sight of the shuttleport in Theed across from the starport. The town is always, ALWAYS dead, even though it is huge. There's no reason to stay there.
BTW, what makes the town annoying is the massive walls of medium Naboos that I have to ride around every time.
Regardless, I just don't see the point . . . why live in a town you have to spend that much money on when everything you need it two minutes away in Theed? I know I would never pay taxes for something like that . . . .

I think alot of current city placement on the "Big three planets" is simply a result of the way in which player cities were implemented. If you look back this was a "race" to see who could log on the fastest after the PC patch, build thier City hall, train their politician and then run to their city location the fastest. As a result the cities that were closer to existing shuttleports had a better chance of being able to place their halls becuse there was less time invovled in the journey. On Valycn server most PC cities on tat, nab and cor are relativily close to existing cities, with only 1 or 2 exceptions on each planet. I do know many players who had ambitions to place on these planets but were unable to because they were 5-10 minutes behind the other PC. If you look back in the threads you'll see that many of the "big three planets" had met their 10 city cap within 15 minutes of servers going live...I think this is the major factor.
