Thread: Transferring the office of mayor; something has to be done here.

So the mayor of my town and I agreed that I should take over mayoral duties from her so that she could go off and do other things. Problem is, we have 47 citizens, 18 of whom thankfully get out and vote. I can't win the majority and re-deeding the city hall isn't realistic, in fact, shouldn't even be an option. Are the devs going to address this problem? I can see some reasons why resignation can't work and why transfer of duties shouldn't work, but there has got to be a better solution to voting out the incumbent mayor than trying to get people who play once in a blue moon to log on. Voting the mayor out works in theory, but with casual players, it isn't really realistic.

I havethree ideas to relieve this situation and I'd like some feedback.

My first idea is that there should be a way for the mayor to announce his resignation and ask for a replacement to step up to the task. The mayor stays in office for a week and if no candidate registers for the vote, the city hall is destroyed. Drastic? Maybe. But what's the alternative? Why should a player city even exist if no one is willing to run it? Our PC now has a mayor with no skills who will be in office from now until doomsday unless I can get 6 more votes from playerswho at bestlog on once a month at random times! With a one week resignation/lame duck period, a city can safely transfer the title of mayor between trusted candidates by asking for replacements to register to vote. No replacements = no leadership = no city. Keeps the database clean of useless information as well.

My second idea is not as drastic and may be a good starting point for change. Why not increase the mayor's time in office to 2-4 weeks? This gives even the most casual player a chance to enact policy and solves the problem of stumping on a week to week basis. One of the most frustrating things is to get players to vote and vote and vote, week after week after week, hoping that enough people will log on to give you the majority. With more time between votes, it makes it easier to rally more votes.

Finally, I have a solution that is taken more from real life politics. Why not rid the system of incumbent votes? If only three people vote and I get two votes, I win. If no one votes, the incumbent stays in office. If there is a tie, the incumbent wins. The good? More political change and less city "ownership". The city would constantly be in flux as new candidates could win or lose easily depending on voter turnout. More people would turnout to vote. The bad? Griefing. PC building theft. Guild takeovers. But can't that happen already? This solution may make those things easier, but doesn't the good outweigh the bad?

So those are some ideas. The system is flawed and needs to be changed. I would love to hear opinions on these ideas. I think a combination of all of them is the best idea of all, but hey, these are just my opinions.

I'd suggest giving your citizens something like two or three weeks notice, let them know that during the week of, say, March 22 you need every one of them to come to city hall and vote so that they don't lose their city when you give up your political skills on march 29th. At that point, it is their responsibility to get to the polls and help you out of your situation in a profession that you no longer wish to play. If they can't get to the polls given a few weeks of notice, they don't care about their city all that much or they are taking advantage of your good nature.

While a good idea, what about cities with 100 or more citizens? Forty-nine people might turn out to vote, but that still isn't good enough. You can't take drastic measures like "vote or the city gets it" because you just hurt a sizable number of people.

The current system is backwards in that those wishing to vote and participate in the system are at the mercy of those that do not. I favor removing incumbant votes, or reducing their worth to count as half a vote.

I don't think anyone's defending the current system, Seiryuu. However the original poster has a problem and the correspondant was offering the only solution currently available to him. Even if he goes back and harangues the devs behind the scenes, it still won't address the problem in any semblence of a timely fashion for the original poster.

I took over from the job when our first mayor wanted to move on, I worked hard 'campaigning" - and I got lucky.

For a week I'd was making lists of members, tracking them on-line, reminding people to vote - even providing credits to fly back to town if necessary (vote-buying?). But it was a new small guild that came that week to join usthat put the vote over the 50% mark. Weeks later, our relationship is one of brotherhood, and our city is prospering.

It might be nice for the devs to address this, but it would also be nice if ppl who start cities think twice about it - and not do so if they have no intention of staying in the position.

I'm going to try what I can and I thnk you for all of your suggestions. They are all useful for short term gain. Thecurrent mayor is a good person that wants someone else to have a turn running the city. As it stands now, she is in grad school in RL and can no longer participate as she once did in the game. It should be easier for her to turn over those duties to someone else. In the long run, the system is flawed and needs redevelopment. Hopefully it will be addressed by the devs at a future date.

Im seeing a disturbing trend on this forum of people being complacent with indifferent voters. Before you worry about shifting a new mayor in you may want to ask your citizenry to vote as it only takes a minute out of aweek. As stated before you can give them a two week notice. I have a hard time believing out of 47 citizens only 18 are active withina time frame of 2 weeks? It is entirely possible but this only shines light upon the ghost town issue. I dont believe imo you should be able to resign and transfer power to a new mayor without a vote, as said before for whatever valid reason IRL sometimes the game mechanics doesnt take that into account.

Here is a quick fix to your situation, if it works the way I think it should. Have the mayor that wants to resign undeclare residence. Then have those that are around vote for you. Now since the mayor is no longer a resident of the city he/she should not beable to be mayor. I do think that the incumbent votes are not a good thing and should be done away with. I hope this works for you if you try it.

Our city's delema is far worse. Our mayor has gone MIA, so we do not have an option as far as I know. We have had three consecutive voting campaigns with little luck. The incumbent votes of the nonactive are excessive in comparison to the others. Anyone have any suggestions for this riddle? Without letting the city hall be destroyed!

Guess what? Those 18 or 19 voters are the only ones active. Either that or they don't bother to vote. And what i'm asking for is a new vote, only with alternate candidates. I for one don't want a city run by a mayor with no skill boxes and no desire to do run the town. We might as well take down the hall if that is the case.

This is a good idea Agori, but being the mayor automatically makes him/her a citizen and they cannot undeclare! Kinda sounds like a catch-22 if you ask me.
