Oh yeah coloring buildings, I forgot to add that to my tutorial. The maps I keep I have setup in such a way as importing the maps in only takes a minute or two, including coloring buildings (Interestingly, the same color, I put civic buildings as yellow) adding in rings, grid, a key, and such. Only takes a few minutes to update using the method I outlined in the tutorial. Not sure about Fireworks, I can't say I'm familiar with it. If you are applying a color over the layer (As opposed to modifying the color in the layer) the same method I use should work with it. The key is a program that does layers, such as Photoshop or The Gimp.

Yep, doing terrain is the most time consuming part of the job. Fortunately it's something you only need to do once. I've gotten pretty good at it and can do it in under an hour.

I did a quick copy of your layout (Took only a few minutes) and discovered the size markers didn't agree - you had only the corner of two of the lower houses outside the city, I had every one of the lower mediums at least partly outside, and the larges also partly outside. You might want to re-check yours - I counted the squares, and you have 8 meters extra (1 box) in each direction, making your smaller circle 416m diameter instead of 400.

Hmm, well we've grown again so the circle is bigger...but I'm not sure how that happened. I just did 200x16x2 for a 200m radius, 8m per block, 2px per meter. Seemed to work ok - every house was inside city limits. I have been tweaking the various pieces a bit as I go, if they're not centered properly or whatever.

By the way - the Rebel and Imperial bases are NOT the same. The footprints may be similar, I'm not sure. But the map view is definitely different for each. As far as I know there are detachment HQs and small bases for each side. The small base footprint is 9x9 square, but it may - as you mentioned - be a different shape when placed. I'll post that info here once I have it.

Oh, I also wanted to mention - in your guide to finding the buildable zones for a city's surrounding area, the harvester trick is useful - but ONLY if you're building on flat land. For planets with crazy terrain, things get tricky.

They've relaxed the restrictions on housing so that more sloping areas can accept buildings, to promote player cities. Harvesters, on the other hand, still follow the old rules. My suggestion is to use a small house to find the buildable areas, to make sure you get every square in there.

Very cool! I guess I have a small advantage in the placement of Mos Strahteks, though. It's on a completely flat, desert area on Tatooine; between Bestine and Lar's Homestead. No water or elevation changes preventing placement anywhere. I've got it easy.

It's pretty easy to make mistakes. Just read through this thread to find many of mine. I discovered after several weeks (Well, really several months since it dates back to the maps I made by hand) that the center two circles were not concentric with the outer circles.

Thanks for the info on the bases. I've got a character on TC that I'll probably be working on faction points with, and that will be one of my first goals of information gathering.

The harvester trick I mainly intended for finding water. I haven't done anything with hills/slopes yet. Oddly, I had the opposite problem, there is a spot where the footprint of a small naboo style 2 fits, and the harvester can be placed in any spot of it, but the small naboo style 2 can't be.

Had the same issue in my city. I tried to drop a house in this one spot over and over to no avail- then one day we were able to place a house. I was so relieved, because it would've really messed up the symmetry of the city if we couldn't have a house there, as the one across from it had a vendor being run by someone who had dropped all his artisan skills, and he wouldn't have been able to move and re-place it.

Did a few updates over the last couple days.

You can now make maps in different sizes. The sizes are measured in the 8x8 lots. The default is 113x113 for a diameter of 904 meters. You can make it as small as 10 lots and as large as 150 lots. It is in the bottom of the options view.

If you enter the coordinates of your city hall (from the city management terminal) you can find out the coordinates under your mouse as you move it around your map.

The map data box is gone. If you still have a map saved as a string from this, you can get it by adding ?mapdata=stuff to the URL, with stuff being the mapdata string.

When you use the "bookmark this map" feature, it will now save the map size and center coordinates along with the house placement.

For fun, I wrote up a quick little bit of stastics. If you open the options, there is a link for stastics. Click on this to get a listing of each type of structure in your city, what rank they fall into, and the total of that structure in the map, including structures outside the city limits. At the bottom is a summary of how many civic and private structures fall within the various rings. The ring that it considers it in is just a close estimate. Structures crossing the edge of a size ring may be counted incorrectly.

So...do you not have a job or something?

This is just a side project. Really basic stuff, really. A couple nights to get things done initially, then occasional time here and there to add features.

The hardest part was getting the graphics, but I'd already done that for a map I keep.

What browser are you using? The error sounds like something IE would saybut I'm not sure why it wouldn't allow that... I'd be interested to know what version. It's possible it could be a security zone setting, I haven't really checked if IE can be configured to not allow bookmarks.

Anyway, I'll put in something to work around that.

Nevermind, I just tried and got the same thing. The pre-loader change brokebookmarks for IE apparently. I've got a fix in the works, should be up in a few minutes.

Gold star for you!

It has been fixed. Give it a try. If it doesn't work, you may need to clear your temporary internet files. In the tools menu, select Internet Options. In about the middle there is a section for "Temporary Internet Files". If you click delete files, then visit the page again it should reload it properly.
