To say:The terrain is/was set by the designers a long time ago. Every dip, canal, etc is hard coded into the game
that is a incorrect statement when in regards to Tatoonie.
Tatoonie is the only planet were the terrain actuallly keeps shifting thru the months od sand storms.
I have been watching a few small ruined building outlines that i saw in the over head map back in sept. Now they are nearly uncovered.
an other example i can vouch for is back months ago when i layed out my factories, i had room to place more. But now (6 months later) the terrain is so ruff that nothing can be placed there, and a ravine/gorge (sp) runs behind them.
Even tho terrain shift can be a nusense (sp), it does add flavor to the game to show it isnt a static planet (well atleast Tat isnt)

The thing that interests me with this, though, is the likelihood of "paving" being added. Camps have a flattening effect to the ground so it would be very nice if paving blocks would also have this effect. Not to such an extent that it would cause a raised part of land where the road is then a ditch on both sides, nor wide enough to allow a house to be dropped in a previously unusable area but simply enough to make the ground appear more natural for a city setting.
I just hope that when they are added we are allowed to place enough blocks to really create nice looking streets instead of 1 block wide straight without deviation pos's to conserve item space. I want to have curves and chain link openings to let nature show through a bit.

This was addressed at Fan Fest
I forgot the dev's name that designed camps, but he said that the ability to flatten terrain for camps was "slipped in" and allowed to stay, because camps are temporary structures that only last on the scale of minutes, and therefore don't have as much impact as proposed player city terrain flattenings.
So, camps are the exceptions to this, and only barely.
The same applies to mission and random spawns. Yes, they flatten the terrain too, but they are temporary structures, not semi-permanent temporary structures like player cities.

True, but I have seen plenty of camps that have lasted for hours on end (ranger grinding) probably from server load to it coming down at midnight PST. If terrain pavers were to be given the same sort of abilities as the camps and were loaded in minutes after everything else was put in (terrain load, housing load, etc. don't know how it all happens since I don't join until well after they come up) wouldn't it be the same as an afk ranger with a good macro? I don't expect you to answer since you aren't a dev or anything but really just thinking out loudI guess. It just seems to me that it should be possible on an extremely small scale and not "permanent"like terraformingfor homesto be placed would be.

easily solved buy having the player houses radiate a paved landscape around the house... just like the temporary camps. this display only affect the players around the "structure"

I'd rather have meter high weeds then nothing but pave stones as far as the eye can see. I want to control their location so nature can still be visible. Roads that curve around gardens, that link up with spaces so natural land can be seen, and I"m sure I'm not alone.
