Thread: City Tax Poll For All Mayors
Our metropolis has run on donations since it was born, apart from the 100 credit shuttle fee as of placing the shuttleport.
I just make sure everyone knows how to donate directly to the city hall terminal by giving directions in the city handbook, and follow-up reminders in a few newsletters. I give them a rough figure of 15k a week, which is calculated to allow for around half the residents to be unable to afford it, and emphasise that if that would be a drain on their pocketbook they don't have to pay it.
We also have a number of wealthy merchants in town who prefer to make generous donations than to have their customers suffer sales tax. And we have a number of guilds in town, a couple of which have also been very generous in their donations.
Another thing we did was have a fundraising auction, where we asked citizens to donate items to be auctioned to the public, with the proceeds going to the city treasury. We had a great turnout andmade around 14 mil in one day, which gave the city coffers a nice boost ![]()
New Roseholme has been running since player cities first came out, and I have not had to inject my own funds into it (beyond the 15k a week) because donations have been so good. Its my theory that people feel better about giving than they do about being taken from, and are happy to donate because it gives them a sense of ownership and pride in the city.
And, the tax system is always there if apathy sets in and the donations stop.

-Encourages donations from citizens with a reminder sent out once per month (usually resulting in a few mil in donations in the day or two after the reminder), follows up by sending outone city-wide email thanking the donators by name (no amounts).
-Monthly city hunts with profits going to the city treasury (Rancor is really good at this time of the year)
-City Vendor in our mall - citizens offer items for 1 cr to the vendor and I sell it for whatever cost I think is reasonable and donate the proceeds to the treasury (again you hae to send out periodic reminders).
-Trainers are only updated once per week
the ex-mayor tried sales taxes only to almost get lynched, I don't reccommend it. People are insanely frugal its amazing how many people wontbuy something because there is a +10cr on it for tax...

Two crafters contribute 125k weekly to maintain the Research Specialization.
We are still falling behind about 200k weekly - and keep Citizens informed by a weekly Mayor's report. Unsolicited donations have kept the Treasury maintenance Buffer at about 20 weeks.
But I have a question about the Sales tax. We have never gotten it to work! We've tried a 2% sales tax 3 times - each time it simply went into the Vendor's pocket.
Have any of you tested a transaction and confirmed the city actually gets the sales tax?
I'm curious because a modest sales tax has not been unpopular with the citizens and might ease the need for some of them to make such major contributions.
I'm curious about those who are using donations to fund their city, especially the ones that recognize people for their donations. How are you tracking these donations, since the mayor doesn't get any kind of report or email of who donates or how much. Are you getting them to /tip you directly so you can track it? I was considering going this route so I wouldn't have to raise taxes, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
