Thread: The Mayor's Burden (Why this is already a dead Prof and can it be saved?)

You have to remember that the most satisfied customers are over there, in the game. Not here
I \think that if I wanted to be a politician, the most exciting thing I could do would be to move in a large city and meet and greet as many citizens as I could and try to take over the city by winning the vote. That's what politics are, right now with everyone having their own community with there friends, politician seems more like a decorator professions.
I think it would be cool if I got e-mail from canidates telling me how they are going to make my city better. It you make me feel my vote was worth while.
Jees! What is wrong with people? Why come here and moan?
If you don't like it, don't do it. Nobody is forcing anyone to be anything from what I can see. There seem to be a lot of people who are having a lot of fun with Player Cities. If you cannot get it to work for you, that doesn't mean it is broken - that just means that you need to go and do something. Just because the game can get updated, it doesn't mean that you should comng whining to the boards every time you cant get it to do something you want. S. x
I see the logic behind both sides of this coin ..... I am the Mayor of elysian Fields on Lok (Tempest) ..... I have two rather simple points to make .....
1. I am always busy ..... I started the city unguilded on my own steam so to speak ..... I currently have no intentions of levying any taxes and see no need for it in the future ...... My days are spent running around between city hunts/missions ( to raise donations for the city) and finding new residents and encouraging them to join cities in general .....
2. while i am completely aware that your cities progression as well as your professional development is "slow" and to some it may seem yields little benefit .... When you truely sit down and think about it a properly run city has more benifits than any other aspect of the game .......
prior to cities how long did it take most people to seek out vendors for their precious wares? I know i myself spent several hours each week combing the outskirts of the npc cities looking for that T21 or those petstims that were worth a darn ... now you can go to most cities that are listed on the map and find a variety of vendors. I am even starting a "Galactic trade center" that will essentially be a collection of every cities vendor located in a central spot in my own city. This will encourage trade, expose other cities to more people as well as potentially profiting my city through a weekly "license fee". If this proves to be a success then we will replicate it in other cities.
prior to player cities would it be possible tocreate another haven for either rebel or imperials? well now the bestine and anchorhead raids can take place on other planets in new cities ..... player cities allow the galactic war to spread ... i mean really how often have you had any large scale PVP on a secondary planet .... Let me ask all of you high ranking people ..... how fun would that detachment HQ be 10k from the nearest shuttle defending a large group of chuba's? now you have a purpose in that massive drain on your FP pool.
ask the novice architect how he is doing now that he has a strong market for those small houses and many a city purchasing 10-20 of em at a shot ...... what about the Droid engineer who, from what my architecthas told me,finally has an item he can sell in order to create something usefull ( the bank ) .....
Also in my journey to create a city of my own i have met people and created relationships that otherwise i would have had .... I have meet alot of good people who truely understand how the GW will be won .... It it teamwork and i can honestly tell you that you learn in this profession who is truely dedicated to their faction and who isnt .....Afterall you look at any good military and self sacrifice for the greater good is prevalent .... by creating a factional city ( I only allow rebels in mine) we have developed a strong sense of comradery in raising new rebels and taking our wasted resources and putting them to a good cause , helping a fellow rebel ..... i will do what ever it takes to aid a fellow rebel afterall regardless of where they live or what guild they are in they are a rebel and one day i may come to depend on their skill to save me ,,,,,, The Rebellion is only as strong as its members i am doing my duty as a rebel in ensuring that our new generation excels at a rapid rate and benefits from the experience of the players that have been around a while.
I myself see player cities as a great benifit to the GW as well as to the RP value ..... Because afterall without the Politician Class none of this would be possible ... so is it a useless class ? no it is an essential class in order for the GW to progress to the next level ..... If only i could get my experience from my election lol i could start all of these plans ...

Mayor Of Elysian Fields, Lok
Master Creature Handler/Master Rifleman/Novice Politician( sniff sniff still no poly EXP)
Tempest
PS dev's if you read this ....after the bugs are fixed for player cities throw this one around ..... allow player cities to be turned into temporary battlefields perhaps when a "slicer" is able to sneak into the base and deactivate some type of radar system that could be placed there .... or like when 20 rebels and 20 imperials are within 100 meters of the city .... that way if you do turn At's into battlefield only i will still get to engage them and maybe even throw in ATAT's for the imps ( I am a rebel but it would rule to get into a battle against it ..... lol but i think the rebels might need to get some heavy duty wire to trip it up ( i want an ATAT carcass outside my city, just like the one outside moenia)
Thank you to the players who have offered constructive comments. I do agree the possiblities cities offer do foster a greater community feel and allow for interesting situations.
I am however looking long term at the ramifications of what I have stated were action orintated "limitations" in the politicain class.... I would like to see more powers..ie /warn /grant zoning rights etc.. that give the mayor of a city the ability to put his words/ laws into a substative action. Having a large # of these types of actions/optionswill allow for greater diversity in the "types" of mayors and the campaigns they run.
I feel adding options to players only increases the character of this game.
Thanks to those who say past the title of this postand looked at what I was really saying.

I've read both sides of this, and I tend to agree that yes the class is weak. I also agree that the class is what you make it.
The only thing I will say though is that it is a new class, and if you read some of the things in the Advanced guide you will realise that they mention how the city was built to be a modular system. It is likely that they had many more ideas of what they could do with cities and politicians, but that time constraints required that they get the most basic of systems out the door, so that people could at least start to build cities.
In my mind this accounts for some of the apparent shortsightedness when you look at cities and politicians. There are obvious things missing. I do think though that in time these gaps will be filled.
It is a new, growing profession, but if you've seen how quickly the other professions are 'fixed' you might want to come back to it in a few months/half a year, because I don't think anything will change before then.
I am in complete agreement with you Varnax. The devs are missing an amazing chance to ehance roleplaying in this game 100% Just a few tweaks to the politician profession and player run events would sky rocket. The class is being wasted.
Right now the politician is... in most cases, just a gardener/recruiter, and once the gardens are down and your city is full sized... you are a spam mail box. The changes you proposed are amazing ideas and I urge the devs to read it over carefully. If even one of those lines you suggested became a reality it could open up a whole new game within the game. Huge roleplaying communities could spring to life and really breathe some fresh air in to this game.

If you want to go cry about it that is why, don't blame the developers for taking it out blame the gung-ho trigger happy people in this game who have no common sense and act very childish by abusing the option to defend themselves when there is really no threat to them.
I tend to blame both.
A) People for abusing a system for the fun of it need to be blamed.
B) People that didn't think through the consequences of implementing loose systems also need to be blamed.
It is not fair just to blame the players. Power corrupts. They handed players power, it corrupted them. No big surprise there. When they implement systems they need to think things through, and stop being so shortsighted.
It has happened to just about everything the developers have implemented, probably not as a fault of their intelligence, but a fault of the time they were given to examine basic possibilities of abuse. Marketing probably charged this stuff out the door before the developers had even finished writing it down on paper. (Just think of someone writing an exam and having the paper ripped off him when the time is up. Its the same deal.)
