just came through spam-center.... er, I mean Coronet and heard an interesting counter to the above argument. doesn't sound right to me, but I wanted to check with folks because it just sounds "too good to be true"

report is, you can 'opt out' of having to pay taxes imposed in a city by simply revoking your citizenship in that city? come on... it can't be that easy, can it?

next think I know, someone will be trying to sell me the Anchorhead Bridge...

No, you cannot opt out of paying taxes, with the exception of income tax. The property tax is automatically added to structure maintenance. Sales tax is automatically added to goods on the vendors. Income tax can only be "opted out" by revoking citizenship. The bad part about doing that is, when the mayor does something, like raise or lower the other taxes, you won't get an email advising you of the change.

My favorite urban legend from my city:

Militia Member: did you remove me from the militia? I can't do any of the stuff I could before and it doesn't say (Militia) by my name.

Me: Have you moved recently?

Militia Member: Yeah, I got a bigger house, but I am still in town.

Me: That's why. When you change houses, you automatically undeclare residence. You need to go re-declare and then meet me in city hall.

Militia Member: Oh.

Once this happened to 2 of them, the others all figured it out and now I get messages telling me to meet them in city hall! It's cool though, my militia is a top notch bunch of people, I love em to death!

Hmmmm rumors hmmmmmmmmmm

1 -- That the city gets money from missions run from city terminals.

2 -- that the income taxes (2k) and property taxes 8% should be more than enough to cover the city expenses. (750k+) <sigh>

3 -- That the mayor has some power to move buildings that have had their players quit the game and leave maintenance on them for the next 12 months.

Well, I don't have to look far. When I was a newb did I know ? Nope.

I didn't even know there were such things as Player Cities, politican, Mayors, houses and house maintenance - - - just to name a few.

Actually, my last mayor never even introduced me to the City Management Terminal. I only found out about them when I became the mayor.

Now, I'm mayor. I help get newbs get started in player cities; setting them up with a house, speeder, maintenance and credits. Help them place their house, declare, and straight to City Hall to vote.

Done voting, good. Here's the City Management Terminal - everything you ever wanted to know about the city - oh, and add here's some other cits - you probably want to add some in your friends list in Ctrl+P

Done, okay, lets go have a tour of the city....follow...

bank...clone..(you probably want to clone here after we're done so if you die - you won't awaken somewhere else)....PA hall, Cantina....Medical Center..shopping Mall....trainers...mission terminals.......here's the Faction Terminal......

But....do any of them actually know how much we take in and how much goes out ?

I don't think anyone has mentioned this one yet.

several times I've been asked to put someone into the militia so that they can defend the city.

I ask them how they plan to defend the city when militia can do two things
/grantzoningrights
and
/cityban

They think they can still /citywarn or some form thereof and that /cityban kicks people outside of the city limits

Hmmmmmmm
if only things worked that way
