Politician Archive
Thread: This week in politics 2/17/04
Well after 106 hours I received my politicial xp so we finally were able to place our trainers. Our city is really brought our PA togethers we have 30 citizens, but we are not expecting to grow at an advanced rate. Also found out that I am given the default vote xp of each of my citizens unless someone runs against me.
So now upon finding this information out, my citizenry do not have to go to the town hall and vote each week.

BaudGnarly: Very interesting to hear about the success of your battlefield city.
Definitely something the devs should take a look at: Do most of your visitors shuttle in or travel over land? I think one of the issues with the dev's battlefields, and one reason for their under-usage was that there was no transportation to them. They were located far from any cities, back in the days before vehicles or mounts.
Newton: I read on post that suggested that a player city that drops down may keep its slot under the cap for a short time so that it has a chance to advance back into that slot if they regain their population after only a short time.
Do you all think this is a fair rule, if that is the way it works, giving cities some leeway in losing a citizen or two that takes them below the required number for their city size and giving them time to recover, or would you like to see more turnover, giving more cities a chance at the high-level city sizes and being less forgiving of a city that slips momentarily in population?
Of course being mayor of a city with over 100 citizens declared (about double what you need for rank 4) I'm not objective here (but who is) ... I'd rather like a version where the city that's waiting for the slot the longest gets it ... so a city that just missed the requirement (no mater if by 1 or by 10 citizens) doesn't "keep its slot" for a "short time" ... a short time would probably mean a full update (would probably have to be coded that way) and so it would prevent a whole planet from using their full

Hey,
Hi Mayor of an imp city on Talus called Black River. Things are going well excpet a mine field that was placed outside of my city's border is now inside. Player who set it won't remove it unless I pay him pretty much all the credits in the treasury. I wish we could just remove any structure in the city limits.
I am not a regular reader of the forums but now that I have started the profession of poltician I find that I have far fewer answers to give people about things than I like. I have been the Mayor for Olympuis Mons on Corellia (valcyn) for a little over 3 weeks now. I seem to see a turnover of about 3 people gone and replaced by 3 more so no growth and no real losses. We have our shuttle port already and I do not think that we are looking at expanding any further.
I took over from the former Mayor becasue he felt that his RL demands had taken away to much of the time he felt he needed to be in game. So no hostile take over or anything. The city contains just two guilds (GODS and MLI) of which I am from the smaller non founding guild. I don't think this has caused any real greif from anyone as I work closely with both guild leaders.
As a doctor I find that the added RP of being the Mayor goes very well together. If im not out with my harvestors I am usually in town or very close by to help anyone that needs it. I am currently working hard to get our crafters centralized into the mall of tents we have down by our shuttleport. This has actually been harder than I would have thought. So many people still trying to holo chase while they still can.
Would be very interested in hearing other mayors ideas of getting this to work.

Just figured I'd drop by, fill you all in about Purgatory, Lok on Eclipse. It's a pretty quiet town based around a sulfur lake just outside of the Mount Chaolt, one of the few places on Lok with grass. The town is fairly quiet (most days), mostly a retreat for the members of our guild, the Guardians of Lok. Not too much commerce, but enough traffic that people will venture just to check the vendors and head stop to look around.
However, we're part of the Rebellion and decided to do our part during the Imperial Crackdown. We've got one of the house complexes up, 4 detachment HQs with houses around them, forming a wall WITH openings (so it is legit). The war on Lok on Eclipse is insane. By far the biggest PvP planet. So we put it up as an Imperial playground, they attack, we defend, everyone has a good time. It's been met with mixed results after a couple huge PvP fests. One was an attack of about 100 Imps on 40 Rebels and the Imps did not get within turret range. I alone had to do my duty (while 3334 in Politician eating up my skill points) and kick about 12 Imperials out of our base singlehandedly while they were furiously slicing the second to last terminal.
It's been a lot of fun, but being a Politician for me is mostly about serving my guild. We're in a transition phase now, moving away from the PvP a bit into the commerce aspect. The hardest part for me, though, has been trying to figure out what to do as Mayor. We remodeling the city which has been fun/hectic so I have to remain mayor for some time, but I also want to go explore and even hologrind a bit. I even have a next in line, who will take over once I get master (because how many people can say they've been a master politician?). I'm still a bit hesitant to do it, though, because I feel like I'm actually putting a burden on him. While most of my job consists of making people militia and granting zoning rights, it seems like a skill point sink for people that just want to have a home together and enjoy some of the benefits such as a shuttleport and policing themselves. One minor request I'd have is a temporary tag that says Mayor of XYZ. THAT would be really cool to have and display at times, in my opinion. Otherwise I'm all for severly reduced skill point cost or no cost whatsoever. The majority of the skills are useless and dull. Without the skill point cost or a severely reduced cost, I'd be willing to overlook all that as I'm not sure how much they can improve the system.
Nothing much has changed in my city over the past week, couple of new residents but that's about it.
What I really like about being mayor is the building aspect, watching the city grow, planning the layout and putting gardens and civic buildings down. Of course those tend to be a set and leave type thing. I'd like to see more civic buildings and more garden types.
What I really don't like is the trainers, keeping track of who wants want and trying to replace one with another and then getting shouted at for removing the wrong one, etc. (Hasn't happened in my new city, but it did happen in a metropolis with a bunch of hologrinders). To sort this out, I just delegated the responsibility to someone that actually doesn't mind keeping track of these things, he tells me what to do. So, in my mind it would be useful if I as mayor really could delegate the whole power of trainer/mission terminal placement to someone else.
Again, this leads into the idea of city councils and having one council 'slot' for each of the four politician trees. A councillor for the militia that can add and remove people from the militia, acouncillor for the treasurythat manages taxes and treasury, an councillor for employment and training that manages mission terminals and skill trainers, and a councillor for urban planning that can place gardens and streetlamps etc.
New Mandalore, Dantooine, Bloodfin. We are holding steady at 99 citizens and still have no taxes. With 7/24 entertainment we are probably one of the busiest player cities in the galaxy, if not the busiest.
The mayor, moi, runs unopposed.
The only thorn in our side are the unused houses of some banned players that clutter up the layout and thatwe can do nothing about. No help from CSRs.
