I expect that many cities will be created and many cities will "fall" within the first month after being created.

Most people who create cities will want structure A and city amenity B and C, and wow wouldn't it be cool to have garden D? Once their city gets the status to create these structures, they will place them and it will take 2-3 weeks to realize that they cannot suppliment the income required to maintain this stuff.

Many PA's and players have created player cities in today's environment. They have succeeded to a degree. The actual "City" itself is a reward for good organization, planning and yes... resources. Not talking about the tangible resources used to craft sturctures, but rather the resources of individuals who are committed to the success of the city itself.

I compare a city to myself wanting to be a Chef. I did not pick Chef to make a profit to retire in the luxury of a Large House on the side of a lake where I sit all day surrounded by stacks of credits littered across the floor. I work as a Chef to provide a service to people which one day will hopefully become usefull to others as they play this game.

Our city is hoping to have the same function as my personal goals. We don't expect to be a "cash cow" for the profit of our PA, but rather as a place where people will want to come and meet us. Let them see that a society of people who have never met in RL can create a fully functional city with all of the things any player could want and expect from a player run city.

I would hate to have a city where our only residents were people from our own PA. Diversity will encourage growth. I don't expect for people to come to Polaris (our city name) to see what Northstar Trade Corp (our PA) has to offer, but rather what Polaris has to offer.

Our city's goal is to "break even" one day in terms of finances, but always look ahead to new people, new experiences and really becomming truely functional. Ihope people to WANT to sell stuff in our city. Ihope people WANT to run missions from our terminals. I hope people WANT to visit my Cantina and try some food. I hope people from other servers hear of our city, and create a character on Kauri just to stop by and check out what we built.

Having a metropolis should not be a "right" but rather, an "accomplishment".

I for one am in favor ofmore than one PA working together to build a city. One PA doing it alone is not as much of an accomplishment in my eyes.

SWG is different than DAoC in that respect. As a citizen of a city, you can contribute to your city regardless of the tag above your head, and your contribution can be felt.

I agree that cities should be for communities to develop, but why have small cities at all if the only financial viable city (withmore character than a hall and shuttleport)is a metropolis with 80 citizens?

Now after my ramble, I'd like a chance to address Goldy's questio more directly:

So someone explain why we would want a city?

We're talking about merging with another guild or actively recruiting the last 20 people for a shuttleport but I don't understand why this is neccessary just to have our own little guild town.

First off, you have plenty of reason to want a city. Yours are to intereact with others, provide them with a place to WANT to visit, all while having a place you can call "Home".

Second, don't merge just to acomplish this. Don't know about you, but to sacrifice the name of your PA for the sake of joining a city is crazy and almost foolish.

Last, I'm sure that regardless of whether or not you get a shuttleport, like any good service, people will come to you for that service/event/reason reagardless, if they have aride or not. You could have a player run event at 0,0 on a map, and people will come because of YOU, and not your shuttleport. If they say "Nope, no shuttleport, not wasting my time", then they don't deserve to come.

Don't be discouraged. Cities and towns, and outposts are supposed to be a "good thing". Make the most of what YOU CAN DO, and have fun with it.

We are building Galdor 5k southeast of Doeba G (oh, hell I don't know how to spell it!), on the east coast of Corellia (Gold Beach...what a cool area name) Essentially, it's a 6.5k run from Coronet.

We're gonna be mostly PA folk to start. But our intention is to invite any who would come to help forge a city in the wilderness.

We have a few attractions close by, such as a Rebel vs. Imp NPC battle field (around 1.2 klicks, I think). We'll have mission terminals pretty early and I'll aim to put the city on the map so that folk know we are there.

The point? Even if we don't get to 50 people any time soon, the point will be to have a base of operations where folk can OWN everything about it. One reason that many of the NPC cities are ghost towns is that folk can't settle in them. You can only sell from the bazaar or from /shout. The public crafting stations are mediocre. The cantinas and hospitals are static, with the same decorations. The player houses, in most cases, are at least a kilometer outside of town. Player cities offer the chance to change all of that.

So if I log in to Galdor and a few other folk are there, we can run some missions or do some crafting or otherwise hang out. We're looking forward to it.

Cities are most certainly NOT for small PAs, in fact they shouldnt be geared towards PAs having cities...Cities are for large groups of people to create a new area on the map where htey can congregate/work out of. If every PA could have a city. The maps on some planets would just become littered with cities. I fear that at first there will be dozens on new cities on the maps when this new push goes live, but hopefully many of those cities will burnout and die when the maintenance costs get to be too much.

Well honestly Sykes we are most intersted in joining your city. It seems you are close to our playstyle and set up but we are just so wary of joining up in setups like this because of the association conflicts in DAoC like I said in my original post. Nothing against your city and policies we're just "once bitten twice shy" sorta attitude over it.

After talking to your council perhaps we could have our guild leaders have a formal meeting to get more than my head into it. They don't know much about the player cities as I was the one researching it all but I've kept them informed enough they they know our choices are to

1. actively recruit
2. join up with others
3. stay where we are and pray some novice politician decides to come rule us.

right now #2 seems to be the favored choice.
