I am the mayor of Deadwood on Rori and my city does much more than break even and we have no city taxes (well 1 credit a week)

Every couple of months we have a guild/city challange and everyone tries to out donate the other members.

I gues sit helps that we are all friends some in RL

and we do alot of hunting and playing together all the time

Here are my 2 credits worth...

We have a project called the "Beautification Project". This is where citizens sponsor gardens on a monthly basis. Gardens, in my opinion, are the nicest visual a city can have... and the most expensive. As you know they add up very fast. But, with the citizens offsetting the costs its great. We ran out of gardens to sponsor and 2 new gardes (exotic) were added and paid for a full year!

Another idea that we came up with about a year ago is a "Goodwill Vendor". This vendor is handled by a citizen. Everyone who wants to donate can. They offer the item for 1 credit and the citizen resells the items on the vendor very cheap. Everyone in the galaxy knows about this vendor. We make on average 1,200,000 credits a week. Since our maintance is only 603,500 a week (and the gardens paid off) we have a full year (52 weeks) of maintance in the treasury (31,000,000).

This is great because we are a tax free city. Always have been since day one (December 17th, 2003).

Property taxes will do it and if all player buildings, homes, guild halls, factories will be taxed regardless if they are a declared citizen or not. Our Metropolis finally reached and even keel. One other source of income is shuttle fees and garage fees.

Hmm eliminate the donation function? Going to sink most player cities I'd imagine, especially any level 4 and above ones.

Donation works because so many Mayors dont become politicians to play the profession, they simply do it to give goodies to their PA. (its easy to feed money into a slot rather than try to convince people they need to pay for their services and mange the tax money)

Not to mention the donation system is allowed to be a welfare system, its been my experience that only a few donate the large amount of fund needed to keep the city going while a large majority of perfectly capable citizens live off of them. (its really a Feudal/Middle Ages type arrangement)

You are right, it prolly would sink a lot of cities, because so many Mayors would prove totally inept, and incapable of managing civic systems. I dont really think thats bad, id rather let the bad mayors get bled off, and make some room for the people who actually want to PLAY the Politician profession.

Iv done the math, posted the results here, its perfectly possible, and feasible to run a Rank 5 city of 140 people, with 230 structures, with multiple parks and lights on tax revenue alone, you just have to want to, and get people over that stupid myth that the city tax system will make everyone broke.

When you can pull 7k missions off a terminal in any city, just how is paying an extra 80cr a day for property tax going to make even the poorest player broke? mmm? totaly myth is what it is.

Basically one person sets it down, and decides what a lottery ticket is going to cost and puts that much money into the droid via the radial. As people purchase tickets, the pot get bigger and bigger, and after a set period of time, a winner is chosen randomly from the list of people who bought tickets, and they get all the money transferred to their bank account.

In some aspect I see your point of people sucking off the system if it is a tax free city. But I disagree that a mayor is incapable of "balancing the budget" just through donations. My expereinces actually pull the city together. We have social events, contests, races, treasure hunts, and many many more ideas. People have so much fun that they donate for having fun and an active mayor who likes the city. I've had newbies that come to the city and, yes, at first, suck off the system, but if the mayor keeps in touch with all citizens (I do.. I'm a social butterfly) then they will grow, flourish, and support the city.

I mean, how can I rely on SOE to manage my percentages of all of the structures in my city if they can't even fix the Shuttleport tax after every reset! If I were to be able to get a breakdown of the sales tax, structure tax, income tax, and so on (like a real budget) I would be more inclined to mess with taxes then play a guessing game on what the treasury will make every hour/day/week/month.

I see your point and raise you 2 credits... hehehe
