Ok everyone, the discussion in the "This Week in Politics" thread got me thinking about city name origins.
So, post the name of your city, and the background or reasoning for naming your city.
I'll start.
New Kabala, Lok, Lowca
We wanted to come up with a name for our guild/city that we could come up with a bit of a role-playing storyline for our city's origin.
Our guild is comprised of a group of loyal Imperial citizens who lived on the planet of Alderaan. For various reasons, each of us were off-world when the terrorist Rebel Alliance destroyed our home world. Through a series of coincedences and chance meetings, a group of us have met on the Nym controlled desert planet of Lok. Most of us were former citizens of the Alderaanian Province of Kabala (we made up this word, not realizing it was a form of Jewish Mysticizm brought to popularity by Madonna). We call ourselves the Remnants of Kabala, and have begun to rebuild our lives on Lok, in our new hometown of New Kabala. We have various memorials around our city, such as the Funeral Pyre of Fallen Heros, and The Fires of Alderaan.
ok guys, post our city name origins.

(Doesn't hurt that a GALA is a party and that's our nickname and our hobby.
We are the GTB because when the founders were noobs, we cut our teeth on the Ravenous Tortons of Rori.)

Kashyyykur...because we're all Wookiee and Kashyyyk is our home planet.
PA - Army of Wookiee Liberation
We're on Rori cuz somebody dropped a city hall right by our guild's collection of houses on Naboo...we were all prepared for the city, then this idiot took the spot from us. Anyway, moving to Rori was the best thing we ever did, city caps are high and we have been a City since we got it. Rori is no longer out of the way, with JTL a quick shuttle to the Starport and I can hyperspace to any planet I want.

Nar Emiki, Corellia.
The name was inspired by Nar Shadda. It also encompassed the names of the founders: Nards, Emide, Mirridor, and Kix

Kor Spera, Corellia. Means "City of Hope". We're a role-play city, so the naming was really important for us.
The Kor we took as a Corellian tag for city (like Kor Vella) in the manner that Tatooine has a lot of Mos city names.
Spera is a Latin form for "hope". We chose that since we had left our old player city after some nasty splits, politics and finger-pointing. So we needed some hope at the time.

Arcadia
It's a great name and a bad pun. Our location on Corellia is right next to a giant POI Arch. Basically a dev randomly picked something out of the agrilat swamp and dropped it on the other side of the world and we happened to find it. So that's the pun. The great part is the literal meaning of the name. Arcadia is basically part of the Greecian countryside andstands for rural bliss and contentment. It has a lot of opportunities to rip off history (and I probably will
) thanks to this as well as just seem perfect for us.
We just hit metro this week and are becoming a hub for Corellia (thanks to our 3 bases and imperials needing some PvP hotspots and our guys wanting it) but it still seems like a small town to me. Everybody says hi to me when we are inside some of the buildings or just standing still and while I'm sure I don't know the entire town it feels like it, and pretty much am 2 times removed from everybody as far as friends or just word of mouth goes so we may be a big city but I still feel that rural simplicity.

well, our guild's name is Unity... back before cities were available, everyone hangs out in the PA hall. I mean EVERYBODY: entertainers, healers, combatants, and lots of vendors in the back room for the crafters. even non-guildies hang out there.
Then the player cities patch hit... our guild leader started New Unity on a beautiful flat spot they found, not *too* far from our old location. we first built our houses really close to the city hall and kept it hush hush, then gradually moved the houses out to decorate and section our city. our city's been called "New Unity" ever since.

Our City is Named Mesric Sanctuary. The Mesric part comes from the fact that the city is built atop the Mesric Plateau right in the middle of a triangle that is less than 2.5k from Bestine, Anchorhead and Mos Eisley. The Sanctuary was a play on the backstory for the city which involved moving away from the major cities becuase we were drawing too much Imperial attention in Anchorhead and Bestine.

New Haven.
In 1997, Ultima Online, Two guilds formed an alliance. Clan Moor (MOOR) and the Lost Order of Akalabeth(LOA). This relationship has continued to this day, in SWG and many other mmorpg's. The "Player city" founded back then was named New Haven, for it's Purpose. Sanctuary for anyone who asks.

New Zion, Talus, Naritus
My guilds original city on tatooine was named Zion, ther city in heaven. We changed mayors and the city fell. So now we are on Talus and the New is obvious to symbolize a new beginning and to bring a better atmosphere to Naritus.

Apotheon was started by the Noble Heroes of Corbantis, who were previously based on the plains near Kaadara. The name "Apotheon: City of Heroes" came from one of our members, Jukskei Bomno, who explained it as follows:
"Apotheon - City of Heroes"
Here's the origin of the name from the word apotheosis and apotheoun
Exaltation to divine rank or stature; deification.
Elevation to a preeminent or transcendent position; glorification: “Many observers have tried to attribute Warhol's current apotheosis to the subversive power of artistic vision” (Michiko Kakutani).
An exalted or glorified example: Their leader was the apotheosis of courage.
apotheosis
Pronunciation: &-"pä-thE-'O-s&s, "a-p&-'thE-&-s&s
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural apo·the·o·ses /-"sEz/
Etymology: Late Latin, from Greek apotheOsis, from apotheoun to deify, from apo- + theos god
Date: circa 1580
1 : elevation to divine status : DEIFICATION
2 : the perfect example : QUINTESSENCE [this is the literary apotheosis of the shaggy dog story -- Thomas Sutcliffe]
- apo·the·o·size /"a-p&-'thE-&-"sIz, &-'pä-thE-&-/ transitive verb
As our founding mayor, Theodis Darkstar, explained in his endorsement of the name:
"The notion that we all journey to achieve apotheosis. And by so gathering in a place like this, manifest a dream that the city will indeed allow it's citizens to acheive a deity-like state. I like Apotheon: City of Heroes.
"It could also manifest and underscore the eternal struggle between Rebellion and Imperium. That in each one's own view they are striving to reach the pinnacle of their cause."
Thereafter the council of NHoC formally endorsed the name Apotheon: City of Heroes, and the city was born.
