Thread: So... What is the point of living in a player city?

As a new Politician I am curious of how to attract people to come and live in my city. When I started thinking about it I came to the realization that I am unsure of the advantages of doing so. I know many politicians pad their cities by giving away freebies like bikes, houses, cash, etc. I disagree with doing that so what can I say to someone that would convince them it would be cool to live in my city and pay the city taxes? What services are provided to a citizen as opposed to a non-citizen who places their house outside the city boundry?

I do know one obvious point is online friends would like a place to be together and feel that type of comraderie in-game. What about strangers though? How do we entice them in?

I am looking for discussion around this issue as I do not immediately see the advantages. I have had my char in my city for sometime and have seen no real advantage to being a citizen. I don't get cheaper shuttle fare or reduced cloning and insurance fees, or even reduced training fees for that matter. I do get the benefit of the city specialization but that can take time for a new city, one has to gain citizens first.

Well first off, of you want a house, you gotta put it somewhere. As a mayor of a city, it is helpfull to have your house in a location with easy transportation planet wide in the form of a shuttleport, access to clone facilities, marketplaces and other player vendors ect ....

The main downside as a mayor is the cost of running a city. It is huge. Without support from the citizens most cities will fall.

but these are just my opinions

There isn't one.

You do it because cities personify and create communities, because they have more control and interest in their layouts their appearance and their overall character. But in terms of raw game mechanics there is no reason to live anywhere but 500 meters south of Coronet.

From having a non-city settlement of houses to making that settlement into a city... the biggest benefit is we don't have aggressive spawn on the doorstep anymore.

It's all about having a community, but you can have that without a city.

The community of which I am Mayor, has many non-citizens living outside the city boundries and using our services. That includes the shuttle, the mall, the cloner the trainers etc. As a metro we can provide the max number of trainers and they are easily changed to fit the needs of the community. The shuttle provides people with quick access to other areas of the planet without having to travel into a NPC city. The mall gives them quick access to many types of merchants selling the complete variety of items available in SWG without having to travel the galaxy.

Another attraction to living in proximity to or within a player built community is that we work hard to build GCW bases, battlegrounds and events. They provide an entertaining environment where peoplewill spend their limited online time. We also host trade shows, guild meetings, other random parties and events and a host of other smaller affairs. We have had weddings, contests, even a Trading Spaces event a' la the TLC TV Show where people trade houses and decorate each others homes.

The player city is a community where it is the Mayors job, as well as other community leaders, to work hard to provide an entertaining online experience for your community. If as a Mayor, that "just aint your thing", then I would recommend that you avoid building an online community.

There are other benefits to living in a player city, such as less lag, easier access to POI's, easier access to a variety of players and communication channels. As Mayor, I work hard to publish a news letter which I send out via in-game email. I also work hard with the various resident guilds to disseminate information through their conduits. I act as the tip of the iceberg when it comes to reaching the community of which I am Mayor.

Cheers!

One more thing...

Welcome to the galaxies most thankless job -- well not always the most thankless, but some days it really feels that way. But I guarantee that when someone come to you and asks for zoning rights to place a house in your community because they heard it was a great place to live, you will feel good. Work with that person. Get to know them. Take time to help them and then a week or two later make sure you reach back out to them to check in. When someone moves into your city and you get that New Citizen email, take a moment to send them a welcoming email.

Wearing the Master Politician tag feels good. People respect good Mayors. Especially those that work to help others.

However, developers made the larger planets too constricting...you cant really have your own outpost with shuttle access...you have to take over someone elses

Gives people a place to call home. An address as it were. There a couple of benefits from city structures. Most of the draw is from the people in the town, because you can store stuff anywhere.

Well when something is in limited quantities, it makes the item/ability much more valued and sought after. Another dynamic in the socio-economic fabric of SWG.

500m from Coronet is still in the no-build zone.

You're right, I was thinking Theed although you could easily argue where the city starts and ends there.

Oh and thanks for clipping out the redeeming aspects and reasons to live in a PC that I posted without even adding in the ... If you're interested in community and the MM or RP part of this game's title then cities are grand if you just want to twink and power level then there isn't much for you. Stop thinking of the OG part.
