After reading a post on the corbantis forums about a "deal you can not afford to miss" a few thoughts came to mind. As I walk around the starports and read forums I see many towns spamming for new members with deals. Get a free house, get a swoop, we will give you a guild hall, how about 100k, etc. Does your town do this or feel they need to do this. Is this the only way to get new members? Is being bigger really better?
Polygon Valley has certianly helped new members get a start with items and have spammed at starports for new members but has never used free goods in our spams to attract citizens. I am not saying this is wrong to offer free stuff just wondering if it is necessary? One offer I saw was pretty good but the bottom line was they demand a pledge of allegance to the town for the stuff. Does anyone give items no strings attatched? If the person decided to leave would they be able to keep their swoop, house or guild hall with no guilt? How about the town proving themselves to the new citizen. Get repect and allegance by earning it not by buying it. I Would like other peoples thoughts on this.

The city of Dohrian on Talus in the Gorath sector does not offer any incentive. Sometimes we give a free house to friends and stuff but that's isn't a regular occurence.
Generally we feel it's a priveledge to live in Dohrian and because we are very selective to who we let in (we're a roleplaying city so only roleplayers can live here) we feel that you can easily get along with those that already live in the city and know what to expect from them.
We aren't the most organized city but we do our best with the time we have.
We have many people who have left the city but not a single one has said they wouldn't possibly return if their life path went that way. And every single one has said that they loved Dohrian like it was their own.
This is what Dohrian is. A community... not just a bunch of numbers.
That is how we continue to prosper even under harsh circumstances.
LONG LIVE DOHRIAN!

We offer a free small tat house to those that want to join us but have nothing (ie: newbies) or if I want them to settle right away then I tell them they can upgrade later and just redeed the small and give it back or pay 8k to city hall as a donation but we dont require that.... it is volentary.

Avatar Metropolis doesn't offer any incentives, except for a small generic house for friends and guildmates.
The point is; we don't have to.

In our beginning days we charged citizens a fee of 20k to pay for all the civic buildings ... and to make sure that people realy wanted to live there, because they think it's a good place to be, and not because of a free house or what ever ... we wanted to bind them and make the city worth something.

"Ask not what your city can do for you..."
JFK paraphrase LOL
We've never offered incentives, in fact, prospective citizens who ask for a free house or whatever are informed they may be happier somewhere else. Someone who says "I've been doing missions all week, and I now have enough money to buy a house to place", these are the citizens we seek.

We don't offer incentives, nor do we recruit. I've always figured someone that comes to my city for the free small house and speeder will leave next week when another town offers a swoop and a medium house, so we don't give anythign away just to move people in. Most of the folks in my city do help new people just because they are nice folks, even giving them houses or speeders to get them started off ingame, but its not city sponsored and residency is not a requirement.

I have incentivised the marketing initiatives around the city. I have offered PA's that move in to town small houses for their members, mission terminals, gardens etc.... On each occasion I have found that by making their move-in quicker and smoother I can improve their situation and help Aurora grow in the process. With the exception of one PA, all have remained and are prospering as is the city. The dedication of the PA leaders in Aurora is terrific. The citizenry of Aurora is dedicated to improving the city. Everyone receives a copy of our charter. If they dont like it, they leave for a city that better fits their needs.
Cheers!

Since I probalby do about 99% of the moving in of the city, though it's not "official policy", I do usualy offer small helps once someone has decided to move in, but not as "incentives".
For new people I'll provide a small naboo house and 1 month's rent, just cuz new people need a leg up. For regular folks, usually they have their own house already and have $$ so I don't bother, unless they're starting over from something, then I'll help them out. Usually, it's pretty obvious which type they are, especially when they say "I'd move in but I don't have a house". Bingo
I usually accept trade-ins of off-planet housing too.

We do offer a small house and a speeder. As above, the veterans dont need them, but the newbies are always very greatful. In one month, we have gone from the prerequisite 10 to 34 citizens as of last night. My town is becoming a close knit community as was evidenced by an offer from another town/guild to merge. I put the question to the citizens as since 1) we would have to move and 2) this would have scored both towns the coveted shuttleport. Unanimously, the citizens voted to stay and commended me on doing a great job and Farpoint on being a great town. I was very proud at that moment. I think that smaller towns may need to offer incentives, especially on the more populated servers and with cities and metroplises already having shuttles.

DaQuilla interesting idea and it sounds like a sound one but probably with all the free stuff out there hard to get takers. Never though anyone would post here they made people pay to live in their town. I like it!

Bashful, I love your thought too. That is indeed the type of citizens we all would like to have. Many responses were what I expected but some area a suprise and interesting. I have been given a few new ways of approaching the never ending cycle of citizenship.

The only incentives we offer are these:
- A place where you know where roleplay is happening all the time (no l3wt d00ds need apply)
- A good time through participation in our various events
- A solid community
In terms of bribes to get people to live in Tirius - we don't do it. We don't need to nor do we want to. We need people who WANT to not only live here but actively participate in the community. You won't get that from the people who need to persuaded with bribes to join
