Thread: Taking over a city?

Is it possible for a Politician to "take over" a city, even if they don't have the skills necessary to "place" the items within that city? For example, could a large guild move into an established city that's unzoned, have a "new" politician win an election, and take it over with no effect on the city? If so- that wouldn't seem quite fair, considering the effort (and most likely, credits)that would have gone into the development of the city in the first place...

What are zoning rights?

It's the ability to prevent people from building inside your city's radius without your mayor's or militia's permission to do so. Kind of like a write permission on a directory in *nix. The mayor of militia member would have to grant the right to that person.

Okay I really think Zoning rights are being misunderstood. My understanding of zoning rights is the ability to grant a player rights to place industrial and/or special structures. YOU CANNOT STOP A PLAYER FROM BUILDING A HOUSEIN YOUR TOWN IF THERE IS SPACE AVAILABLEAND IT'SBUILDABLE.

If I'm wrong I'd love to hear it, but I'm pretty sure this is a drastically misunderstood ability.

I don't know how else to say this... but I think you're wrong.

Everything I have read here says that a city with zoning rights turned on CANNOT be built in unless the mayor or a member of the militia grants the right to, no matter what the structue. Why have the ability at all if you can't keep them from building houses? That's a little silly.

A mayor with Civic Policy I can set the city to "require zoning rights." When a city requires zoning rights no one may place a structure in the city without permission. The mayor and the militia can grant a person permission to place structures for 24 hours with /grantZoningRights. Using /grantZoningRights again on someone that already has rights to your city will revoke the rights.

Now the only change I see from this is that you get zoning rights at novice now. So yeah you can stop people from placing without permission from mayor and militia. I am so pleased about that =)

No, closing off your city to preserve a specific culture that you've been working to obtain, without worrying about others who could care less about it coming in and stealing all the buildings you saved forever to put up and essentially forcing you to move out if your community becomes ruined by griefers, slaggers, you name it.

Vass said that zoning rights only extend to your current radius of control, so at Rank 1 you only have zoning rights at 150m. This needs to change or there's going to be serious problems with griefing.

Besides, I don't think structures affeceted by zoning rights include houses anyway. Tyldak, I'd love more control over cities too, but you must understand all city buildings are PUBLIC buildings, they're not yours.

While they may be public buildings, you can /ban undesirables from being able to enter them.

I feel the purpose of control is to prevent others from coming into your city and taking away from your guild all the hard work and untold credits you're putting into making the city what you want it to be. Why put in all that work just to have somone come along and steal it from you? Guilds will create cities so they can have a place they can call theirs, a place where they can feel a sense of accomplishment by saying "We are a strong enough group to have put this together." And having someone come along and just take that out from under you is... beyond imagination.

Well you have a small imagination because that is what makes politics in a democracy. True there are some exceptions like FDR but cities are meant to have the ability to be dynamic. If all your political opponents are forced out of town to insure your power then it isnt a democracy its a vote for 1 person since all the others are banned. Yes it would be rather annoying if after solely paying for a number of structures someone came in and took the control of them away from me...but if they remove the ability to destroy the structures (with the exception of some extreme cases, ie city hall but no citizens) and lessen the ban power it really doesnt matter anymore does it? You guys are trying to centralize your control so noone can wrest it from you...but if and when they do your just setting yourself up for a big fall. Oh well I'm not digging my grave so it doesnt matter. Anyone on bloodfin want to join a loose confederation of 3 PA's and random villagers where anyone can be mayor after we get a shuttleport, I'd prefer being king of town up until then to garuntee we get the thing, give me a pm.
