I am mayor of a metropolis on Dantooine on Bria server and was a master politician. My character was so whimply I couldn't even defeat the sith shadow pirates to do the force sensitive intro quests. I had to give up politician skills to get decent fighting skills to be able to do the quests at the village on Dathomir. I hate to say it, but Politician is nothing more than a glorified house, terminal, and trainer placer. Nobody in my city wants to be mayor as they would never have time to play their character as they would spend all of their time in game helping other players. Being a mayor is a totally worthless skill for the skill points, as you don't get paid for what you do and you lack the skill points to even master 3 professions, meaning you have a totally whimpy toon that can't even fight.
As a former master politician and present mayor of a metropolis.................politician is a totally worthless proff and definately a total waste of good skill points.

I'd disagree with you that a pol is worthless. They areneeded for adding to your city. If you wanted to kill those sith, get a combat droid from a DE. Get some stims to heal it and some batteries to recharge it. Perhaps this would have worked. I can't say for sure either way. It might have been very time consuming though.
You could try master tka/master/brawlermaster pol with a little medic?

The politician skill tree is not worthless, IF your goal in the game is to socialize and be a successful community builder. If I wanted to be a gunslinger I would not have persued the politician profession. I like being a politician even on those nights when I have to ban someone or report someone to the CSR team for being a jerk. While I may joke about being a hostage in my own city, I really like building the community, developing new events (even if they never get implemented), working with PA's to build their membership and reputation and generally helping those persons that choose to spend their limited online time in and around the community of which I am mayor.
So...you see...I disagree with your premise that the Politician Skill Tree is worthless. I would like to see some skills for Master Politicians but for now I am still happy.

I agree it is basically a worthless profession but there is no reason to lose to the siths shadows. The above template is very good. You could even drop medic to pusue the FS skills.

I think I figured it out so that I could get TKM, Master Swordsman, and Master Politician.
With that template, you can be one heck of a tank and still rule with an iron fist.

What adds to the negative aspects of beeing a politician is that banks etc take lots...

Banks, clone center, garage, city hall, and shuttle do not take lots. These are "city structures", and not personal structures when lots are considered. Granted, only the mayor can place them or remover them.
Theaters, Cantinas, and Med centers take the lots of those who place them, but the mayor doesn't have to. It requires Masters of various professions to do that.
Master Polititian I feel is a waste of points. But the path is a fun one to play as long as you consider Politician asa secondary character class. And that is not a bad thing. I used to have a CH, Swordsman, Politician template that was not too bad in PvE.

Civic structures such as banks, garages, shuttles, etc, all take no lots.

Now that's what I thought aswell, and that's what's in the faq, but I just laid our bank and got an e-mail telling me I now have 7 lots left.
Is there perhaps any special command I should have used to lay it (I just placed it like a house/harvester).

Count the structures you have placed vs the lots. If you have 7 lots, and drop a bank, you will get a message saying "you have 7 lots left".
I have a guildhall (9 lots) and a merchant tent (1 lot). Every time I drop a bank or garden, I still get the message "You have 0 lots left".
Annoying and confusing, but that's what's going on. Or should be. lol No guarantees in SWG.
Hope that helps!

Funny, here I enjoy being a near master politician (grabbed it for the badge but prefer the statesman tag so dropped it) and don't mind the fact that I'm a poor combatant compared to the standard PvP template. Merchant is a bit of a pain and that is why I'm just replacing my real vendors with uninitialized decorative bodies then dropping it for something else. I'll probably go up fencer since it does compliment my rifleman and I'll be of some use in base defends. I won't be the most deadly player on the server, but then if I wanted to do that why would I have become the mayor of a town?
I just want to have some friends, a nice area to call my own, and be somewhat well known in certain circles. I have all of that and more; the only thing I have as a headache is the sales tax bug and that's getting fixed...eventually.
