I have submitted a feedback form with the following ideas and just thought I'd post what I came up with to see what people thought of it.
My idea was for a change in the way languages are taught to other players and have a list of changes that would be a little more realistic than just learning every language in a matter of minutes.
- Players can only be taught languages by a member of that species. eg a Zabrak cannot teach somebody how to speak Ithorese.
- Language transitions/learning will take place over a period of time. ie 5-7 days
- The transition will be gradual, first difficult to comprehend by someone who is fluent, eventually words becoming more accurate and easily understood until the player is completely fluent in that language.
- The speech from players new to the language being learned would be broken, and intersperced with words from the BASIC language. There would be less BASIC words as their skills in the language increase.
- A possability could be a sub-screen in the skills window, showing the progress in each language, although this may be a little overkill for something as simple as learning languages in game.
- The transition speed and learning process could be effected by the amount of time the player spends talking in the language being learned. eg more practice means becoming fluent much sooner.
- The player would be notified when they have become fluent in the language, and possibly other messages/e-mails explaining they have increased their skills a little, becoming more easily understandable.
- Either this transition could be automatic and initiated by the initial teaching of the language, or it could require several lessons from a member of the required species, eg limit of one lesson per day with a maximum of 5-7 until the player is completely fluent.
Realistically, I would rather SOE fix current bugs and there are obviously more important features to work on. I still think this would give a little more realism to the roleplaying aspect of SWG.

This thread would likely get more and better attention in the Core Systems forum since it's devoted to these types of systems as this isn't exactly a PA issue.
As for the ideas, I argued for changes like this back when SWG was still in beta. While it would help roleplaying, I don't see it ever happening. Everyone uses basic. I very rarely come across anyone using anything other than that, so while it might help roleplaying, roleplayers could also use self restraint and adhere themselves to the type of rules you said above and just not learn other languages. My character on live just learned a couple languages for the first time since launch because I thought he was finally ready.
The system you talk about is kind of similiar to how languages were done in EQ1. You had to actually sit and listen to someone speak the language and you slowly learned it yourself. I always liked that system and wanted to see it here.

Well, I think a learning process is in order, IF there is some benefit gameplay-wise to do so. Otherwise I do not see it on their to-do list..........I would say however, if the current system is to remain in place, it should be easier to teach languages. The one at a time one after the other with no real benefit can be tedious.
