Thread: Encounter systems

Since kill stealing has become a very talked about topic lately on our forum, I thought I would start a topic dedicated to the discussion of possible ways of preventing it. I think we can all agree that it needs to be done, the question is how best to accomplish it.

One way to look at it is to compare a couple other MMOs, namely EQ2 and WoW.

EQ2 has a pure Encounter Lock system meaning as soon as you engage you target no one can help you at all. No healing or attacking the target until you "Yell" for help and break the encounter at which time you gain no experience or loot any longer from the kill but others can help you.

In WoW, from my understanding, it's more of a "First person to hit it" gets looting rights but others can still attack the creature. Just the first person to hit it gets the looting rights.

I think for the best direction in SWG, we should try to take the aspects of both games and make a much better system. I'd love to hear your thoughts on both types of systems and how they can be improved for a SWG type system.

One thing to add about WoW, it is first hit gets the loot, but everyone gets the xp from the attack. Also, if you break the attack and the mob gets far enough away (around 90m) they go back to full health and you no longer have loot rights unless you decide to attack it again.

The way I think it should work is the first person/group to attack the mob owns loot rights.. If the entire group breaks agro, then the group loses loot rights and other people can jump in. There needs to be an indicator to tell the group if they are currently the ones who are getting loot rights. That way if two groups are invovled, the one that isn't getting loot rights can break agro and go hunting for another mob, instead of waiting to the end and finding out they don't have loot rights.

I love the idea that has come up with the loot revamp about who loots and all in a group however the loot stealing is a problem and may cause controversy over kills. If a person is like standing right next to nyax but a rifleman that is 25m away from him gets in the initial hit the person standing next to nyax hoping for the kill will be sorley angry. I totally believe it needs to be an encounter/first hit rule to stop some of the kill stealers but it will be about 1 gallon in the 10 gallon problem. Some people will complain saying I have such and such legendary weapon with 2.9 speed and 2k max dmg I deserve to have it where as the little person may get the first hit. That I have no problem with cause it will help out the little guy getting the kill but it will also cause problems where the little guy will may grief "The nice" person with the legendary weapon by hitting nyax first then just running nyax a bit of the ways and trailing him off. I think maybe that if you/your group get the initial 3rd to 4th hit in that the kill should rightfully belong to you vs the person who is speed capped and has that ubber weaponry that is camping the rare spawn for more stuff.

That is why they need to make it so when you run away/peace, you lose any loot right you may have had, or in a group case, all members of the group have to lose agro for the group to lose loot rights. Also, there needs to be some indicator to let you know if you have loot rights currently or you are wasting yourtime. If you come up to a mob and start shooting but see someone else already has loot rights on it, you don't waste your time killing it and get nothing for your efforts.
