I passed some of these ideas off to a couple of SOE developers and QA people at the Fan Fest this past weekend and they all seemed intrigued by it and said that I should definitely come and share this with my PA Correspondent. So here it is.

As it currently stands, sponsoring someone into your guild is nothing more than an extra step in the acceptance process. I can only guess what the original concept was for the sponsorship function, but for many guilds this extra step is meaningless. Such is the case with my guild.

One of the larger and more active guilds on Corbantis, my guild gets frequent new recruits seeking to join. Due to the large, yet close-knit nature of my guidl, we have an intricate recruiting process that all applicants must follow:

  1. They must first contact one of my recruiters and pass through a basic "interview."

  2. Once they have shown through a short conversation thattheir basic personalitywill match well with the rest of the guild, they are sent a short (10 questions or less) questionnaire that is geared towards letting my council leaders know a bit more about the person.

From here is where we encounter our problem with recruiting:

  1. If there are no alarming responses to the questionnaire, the new recruit should be added to the friends list of each of my council.

  2. Whenever there is an event of some type, be it a raid, city defense or what have you, the council is supposed to check and see which of the applicants is online and available for participation in the event.

The problem is that oftentimes our events are so spur of the moment that people tend to forget about including the applicants. This leads to general disorder in the recruiting process due to the fact that the applicants aren't known well enough by many in the guild before they are accepted.

Why not make sponsoring someone into a guild actually have a function beyond it acting as a "vouching" system? Some ideas:

  • Give people that have been sponsored access to guildchat.

  • Give them access to guild e-mail.

  • Add a voting function to the Sponsored Members menu that non-leader guild members have access to.

  • Add further functionality to the sponsorship menu to give guild leaders the ability to edit permissions and access levels for sponsored applicants, i.e. when you go to the Sponsored Members menu (or whatever it's called) on the guild terminal and select a player's name, instead of simply getting a "Yes" or "No" option, add in a "Permissions" section that allows you to toggle their access as a sponsored applicant, giving you the ability to:

    • Moderate their access to guild chat -- no access to it, full access to it, or read-only access to it.

    • Toggle their ability to recieve guild e-mail.

    • Toggle whether the voting function is used as a means of acceptance or denial of entry into the guild, whether it's used for purely informational purposes for the guild leaders, or whether it's completely turned off.

Anyway, those are some of my ideas, please let me know what you all think -- especially you, Jascentia.

Sounds like an extremely good idea. Let's only hope it gets implemented.

I have already requested a toggle for guildchat hear/speak access for sponsored members. I thought it would be a good first step. Of course the system as it exists could use a lot of expansion in various directions. Unfortunately adding functionaltiy/content for PAs takes a back seat compared to some of the large scale revamps that are a mustbefore JTL. At this pointI suspect there may be some GCW-related enhancements for PAsfirst. It is hard to say but I'llkeep trying!

These ideas are fantastic. Sometimes it can be hard the new person to fit in, and being able to access guild chat and get guild email would help a lot. Good ideas.
