We have 2 guilds merging, both agreeing to have 1 new name and lose the old ones.
We decided it would be easiest to have one guild absorb the other temporarily and then change the name...
WELL!!
Then we go to switch to the NEW name and it tells us it takes 7 days???
So now we have a lot of aggrivated and confused players wondering why their former guildmates are running around with our guild tags.
So the other guild needs to explain, blah, blah, blah.
Some are suggesting dropping a 3rd hall and each respective guild dropping their old names and taking on the new name from the 3rd guild hall!!
SHeesh!! its too complicated!
Advice??

The reason that 7 day name change limit is in the game is to prevent people from jumping from guild name to guild name to avoid their actions (Such as griefing and once the guild is known for it, you change the name).
You pretty much outlined the best option to do if it is truly causing a problem by waiting out the 7 days. Make sure you have the person who is going to lead the newly merged guild place that third hall, otherwise you'll have to vote him into the leadership which always takes a full week, if 51% of the guild votes for him. Otherwise, I think you'd end up in close to the same situation again.
If both guilds agreed to merge, I don't see why it would cause a problem in the first place. All members of both guilds should have been notified prior to starting the merger and should realize what was happening. Either way, if it is causing problems, I'd drop the third hall, but just remember that then you'll have to readd all the members from both guilds.
Hope that helps.

If you are going to place a 3rd Guild Hall and have everyone move to it, make sure the person who is going to place is NOT A MEMBER OF EITHER GUILD AT THE TIME!
This is important. By default if a Guild Member places a guild Hall it becomesa Guild Hall of the Guild they are already part of.
As a result, what you need to do is have the individual leave your Guild, place his Guild Hall and create the new Guild (he will then become Guild Leader). Then all the members of the old Guild have to leave the old Guilds, and the Leader of the new guild has to accept them into the new guild. Once everyone has left the old Guilds those Guilds will cease to exist, and when the owners of the old Guild Halls leave their old Guilds and join the new ones the Guild Halls that those characters have will become Guild Halls of the new Guild.

Just send out a guild mail and explain what happened. I'm sure they will understand. If they are still extremely upset about something you can not control then you may wanna reconsider the merger.
