what is it? how does it work? from what ive read it improves a weapon considerably, something a smuggler does?

Slicing is a smuggler skill.

With it they can improve your pistols Dmg or Speed or some combination of the 2. some where in the 10 to 30% range depending on the skill of the individual slicer. Can get some very nice improvments with this ability.

However it comes at a cost, and some sumgglers are so hard up for slice XP they will forget to mention the down sides to you. The 1st cost is paying the smugler, you generally only want master slicers touching your wepons and they charge for thier time as they are no longer XP starved. 2nd once a weapon is sliced you can never repair it again, once it hits 0 durability its gone forever, youve over ridden its safety guards and burned it out. 3rd the weapon will burn out at a faster rate ie its condition will drop MUCH faster then it would unsliced. Most sliced pistols will burn out in 3 days or less if your playing steady. So while slicing can do cool things for your weapons be aware if your gonna used sliced weapons you may wanna look into buying them in lots of 10 or so so your not coming back for a while as thats in general about 2 weeks worth of guns give or take.

All that beeing said slicing is a good thing, you just gotta plan for it. First time some bum smuggler forgot to mention slicing down sides and my pistol crapped out in mid mission I got a ticket to the cloning facility and then had to go off planet for a new pistol as I found out my weapon repair kit did not fix it.
