FD is currently the "ultimate defense"...especially if you're a PvE player. With that, you really don't need the defenses from Pistoleer as much. The more powerful reason to go to Smuggler to me(again, for PvE) would be for Last Ditch...With that, a great DE-10, and firing at the speed cap you could out DPS some riflemen.
