One main thing is armor piercing. If you have a AP 0 rating and go up against armor rating light (1) you automatically lose 50% of your damage unless your damage type hits a vulnerability. On the other hand if you have armor piercing 1 and go up against armor rating none (0) then you get a 25% bonus to damage. There is a bug with this in that you don't get a bonus to damage if you hit a vulnerability but it's still nice to have.
The next thing is speed. Depending on your speed modifiers you may want a gun that does less damage but fires twice as fast. Once you get up toward master this isn't as effective because you'll be able to shoot most pistols at the 1 second speed cap anyways. It's a good thing to look for when doing marksmen or novice levels.
The last main thing I can think of is HAM costs. As a pistoleer you'll be shooting alot of specials and if you burn out your action pool in 5 shots you'll need a lot of stimpacks. This well be especially true after the combat revamp where specials will take their cost out of your total HAM pool and you won't be able to spam tons of specials, pop a stim and then spam more specials. It can be countered with buffs and food making your HAM costs minimal or zero.
If your going into PVP you'll need and accurate gun. Defences may have been capped but we still have the lowest accuracy out of the ranged professions. It doesn't matter how strong your gun is if you can't hit the other guy with it.
