Thread: Dodge vs Ranged Defense

I am currently making the switch from rifleman to pistoleer (and hanging on to combat medic), my hope being that even if I can do less damage from my weapon, I can last longer in a battle due to defenses and dodge, making me a better combat medic.
I understand that melee/ranged defense work seperately from block/dodge/counterattack, but my overall question is:
- In your experiences, what would be more useful, X ranged defense or X dodge and why?

From Rifleman to Pistoleer? Not heard that one before... welcome. 
I'd have to say given the choice I'd take dodge over ranged defense. Pistoleers dont get much in the way of ranged or melee defense as it is and dodge is the thing I see most in my combat tab.
As for doing less damage, forget damaging anything with heavy armour like you used to and also you might want to get your self a set of health poisons to go with healthshot2, the health targetting pistoleer special.
But you are right, Pistoleer defenses do seem to help combat medics stay alive more than Rifleman does.
Just be aware that you've just gone from playing SWG on "Easy Mode" to playing it on "Hard Mode".

I hafta say guys, I've been a Pistola for some time now (first combat prof) and i'm loving it. I agree that we have a hard time hurting things with hvy armor, but thats why i also picked up a bit of the Commando (0040), so i melt those creatures. Now onto the awesome part of pistola - +100 dodge minimum, i'm dodging melee attacks left and right. Watch 10 ranged enemies shoot at me, and all you see is me somersaulting all over the screen. Also, we can do ANY type of attack with basically 1.0sec DPS. Now whats so bad about that?
If you really wanna keep some riflemen-type skills, pick up BH 0020, so you get eyeshot and watch as enemies are blinded and their minds drained. Awesome stuff.

Thanks for the input, pretty much what I was hoping for.
I went rifleman a bit more than a year ago when I figured out that spraystick + mind poison was fun, even if not so effective without armor and with that 2.5X damage mod. And look at it now.
Again, thanks for the input and I forsee many happy days following the dangling carrot that is the CU!

pvp = dodge>ranged-D

I went from Rifleman to pistoller.
Also was a TKM too. And every other professian to unlock. lol
But I prefer pistols over every other means of combat ingame.
Sure the damage doesn't live up to any melee professian and rifleman is the only ranged professian that can at all be compared to melee but I prefer pistols. Always have.

Honestly, if you are after the best "live long and prosper" profession, you should probably consider fencer. Get yourself a mind fire knife, and all you need to do is stick the fire and you are set. You can throw the poison at your pleasure, and COB to stay off the damage. Fencer gets the same defences as pistoleer, gets combat equalibrium, and also gets +60 ranged and melee defence. All you will get out of pistoleer is +40 melee. Of course if someone kites you, you will have a MUCH harder time killing them as a fencer, so that is defenently a consideration. Just consider fencer as your complete defence, and pistoleer as mostly defence with some offence.

I considered either TKA or fencer, but I've decided that melee is icky.

Only with a 1.1 speed Pistol, or perhaps with a 1.8 weapon and faster.... Stoppingshot cannot be spammed at 1.0s with just Pistoleer with weapons slower that. Master Pistoleer has a 74% speed reduction. I think you are confusing that with Rifleman's 90% speed reduction.

Not true. Check out Rem's Dmg Calc. It shows that one can do stopping shot once/ second with a 2.7spd pistol and +79 pistol spd.

ok ok +74. My bad - I must have some tapes that push it up to +79 lol. In any case, I still am able to kick butt with StoppingShot, although after reading through these forums, i'm thinking about doing more HlthShot2.

You get +74 pistol speed mod as a master pistoleer, not +79
