Thread: What's the big fuss about Damage Mitigation?
I guess my main question is this:
Why is the market for Uber Weapons going to suddenly have a price crash? I never realized that all the people who buy my weapons ONLY use them for PvP.
By the sounds of this whole thing, if you can hit for 2000 damage with stopping shot on a creature now, you will still hit for 2000 damage on that same creature later (with damage mit. in game)
I read the big post, read through the replies, and I just don't get it.
Let me just present what I've boiled out of all that info:
A Master or High Level Pistoleer WILL BE BETTER DEFENDED from ranged attacks.
An Uber Krayt FWG5 will still kick some butt against creatures, but will be weaker against pistoleer or other combat class with damage mitigation.
This change only affects PvP, and it also will make fighting NPCs with blasters easier.
So what's the big fuss about? Unless I am totally misunderstanding this, it doesn't change much of anything for those of us who just hunt and never do PvP.
i.e.
if a NPC (ranged attack) is 80 - 250 damage it'll help us a LOT in PVE.... if they are like 200-250 then it really won't do a gosh darn thing
yeah it really won't help us non-PVPer's that much..
unless NPC / MOB have high damage ranges too...

People picking up those uber guns were not using them for PvE. I guess I can't really speak for everybody, but my best pistols weren't used for grinding out experience on Dantooine.
Speed will always be a major factor. that G5 u speak of is like 1.3 or so if it is KT, a Dx2 will take 5 tissues and only get to around 2.3, 1.9 with a good slice. Your specials are directly linked to speed. KT weapons will have this factor.

You raise a valid point. Often times the weapons with the greatest range of damage also have better speed. So even though such weapons suffer a larger penalty due to damage mitigation, their speed advantage offers superior damage per second. Unless of course you're a dabbler with the BH pistol line, in which case you'll have over 100 pistol speed, making weapon speed meaningless.

You are correct. People just need to be more selective on their guns. If you are a PvPer then you probably want something with a smaller range of damage. If you are a PvE player then it doesn't really matter for now.
That point about PvP is true to an extent, but keep in mind that it's still beneficial to have a high damage gun. However, Damage Mitigation (as the name implies) mitigates some of that benefit. For example, if I'm attacking a fellowMaster Pistoleerwith a powered up, krayt enhanced FWG5 with a damage range of 70 - 380, he's going to mitigate 60% of that damage range, meaning my weapon is now essentially a 70 - 194 FWG5. On the other hand, if I attacked the same player with a standard 60 - 200 FWG5 then his damage mitigation would make the range 60 - 116. So you can see that it's still an advantage to use your high damage weapons in PvP, it's just not as great of an advantage as it once was (unless of course you're fighting non-master level players or melee classes).
The best solution is to have a high damage weapon with a low range between minimum and maximum damage. A Scatter Pistol or DX2 might be a better choice than an FWG5 or Republic Blaster. Then again, it may not. A 100 - 155 damage DX2 is still not going to do as much damage as the FWG5 mentioned previously, although it's clear to see that there's not nearly as much of a gap between these two weapons as there was before the patch.
Bottom line is, don't go throwing out those uber FWG5's just yet. They still have considerable value, even in PvP.
