Thread: hard cap on accuracy-damage?

in a post below is mentioned anincrease in accuracy improving damage. i have seen this, but i have also encountered what i think may be a hard cap for accuracy/damage.

i have an accuracy using a pistol(0 bonus on pistol) of 252. When i use rally, which adds 40 to accuracy, i see no change in the damage each shot does.

now, when i use a rifle(0 bonus on rifle), my accuracy is only 212. when i use rally(puts me back to 252), i DO se an increase in my damage per shot(albeit not alot vs not rallied). i have tried out deuterium-pyro that adds 189% to accuracy while using the rifle, and it see exactly the same amount of damage increase that i do with rally. I know riflemen with accuracy of near 250, and rally doesn't add to their damage.

i've used rally and D-p together for a staggering like 480 accuracy with pistols and seen no added damage.

Eh, you really should only take that at face value. The guy dosent list his testing procedures or his control set ups. When i was MBH/Mrifles/0404 pistols, i tested against my naked alt. i dont have the stats on the weapon at hand, but i have the results. Useing ranged shot i did 680 per hit. When i used Aim (+80 accuracy) it pushed me from 300 accuracy to 380 (in theory) my damage went up to 701 per ranged shot. It seems there is a point of dimishing returns there.

Since he dosent post what his subjects were, or how the test was conducted, i really wouldent consider his information to be the least bit credible.

I have tested this, and it does make a difference. I don't ahve the numbers in front of me, but whilst fighting a mdefender, he put on aura and I was hitting for 100-150 dmg pershot. I took some d pro, and started hitting him for regular damage (for a whopping 45 seconds). the d pro upped my accuracy to about the same level of his defense, so it DOES make a difference.

I love running my CoB+Duelist stance macro (+410 defense) and watching jedi hit me for 30 points of damage at a time.

MBH, MP, SL 0404, fs ranged accuracy 4, imp prototype shield +10 general ranged accuracy...i think thats all my accuracy mods, i dont have any skill tapes.

the +5 and +10 range arms

targets were large tower turrets.

is that better?

Edit: I'm not referring to fighting jedi with that insane defense buff but in pve environment, so i spose its more of a soft cap then.../shrug..its just something i happened to notice

I bet you're popular on your server for killing peoples turrets from out of range.

I doubt turrets count as a vaild target for testing purposes.

no difference than a rifleman kiting any carbine-melee outside of their attack range. besides, if you cant take down a pve base without requiringa master defender jedi, thats kinda silly, isn't it?

Here's how I think damage works.

Your accuracy is compared against the defense of the target in some weird formula that figures out what value out of your damage range (min value to maxvalue)of your weapon to pick.

It is my theory, that in PvE combat a creature of your CL or lower has no defense modifiers at all (meaning natural weapon defense, ranged defense and melee defense are all 0). The reason I believe this is that I am a CL 80 character and when I use Warning Shot on a creature that is CL 80 or lower it has no effect on damage done. If I use it on a CL 81 or 82 creature, it has an effect on damage.

Working from the above theory, I am pretty sure that 250 accuracy vs your CL or lower in PvP is the "cap." By "cap", I mean that a difference of 250 between the accuracy and the target's defense will result in the weapon firing at max damage. Increasing the accuracy at this point does nothing, because the weapon will NEVER fire for more than the max damage listed. This is why Rogue and rifles are seeing that raising their accuracy doesn't do anything in PvE combat. They're already hitting as hard as their weapon hits. As soon as they fight a CL 82 creature though, they will not hit for max damage (please refer to my test thread if ya don't believe me. I did a test with a friend who has 275 acc with a rifle against CL 80 and CL 82 Bolle Bols.)

From the above two, fighting a CL 81 or 82 creature, you will seen an increase in damage if you increase your accuracy. Why? Because the creature has a defense modifier above zero, so the difference is lower than 250, and you're not doing max damage anymore. Raise your accuracy and you'll increase the damage up to the max of the weapon. Also, if you lower the defense of the CL 81 or 82 creature (through warning shot or state effects) you can put the difference back past the 250 threshold and do max damage (assuming you have an accuracy of 250 or greater.)

From the best of my understanding and the best of my experiences... Nifty is correct.

- At 250 points ABOVE your targets defense, accuracy bonuses make no difference in damage (and I assume hit/miss ratio).

- Equal and lower CL have 0 defense versus you, so... your accuracy is exactly what it looks like.

- higher CL mobs have a defense stat versus you, so it will mitigate your accuracy.

Assumptions... round 2.

- Cap on Defense is 250 points above your attackers accuracy. Never tested.. but seems logical.

So it makes me wonder... if a Jedi, or other opponent (super high level mob) actually has a defense bonus that grants him/her 250 points defense above my accuracy with my best modded clothing and foods, then do my foods and clothing make no difference? If I can't close the gap by less than 250, should I spend my foods on other things such as defense or health regen?
