Ive recently mastered pistoleer, and am, wondering if there are any tricks to fan shot, as in using it on lairs - its sually good for the first few shots then theyre all near me, kiting works sometimes but then the lair goes out of range
what is the trick to using this efficiently?

Imagine a 30º cone from your pistol. If you do that, you'll see why fan shot works ok at the first shot and is has much lower efficiency when the creatures spread out or come closer.
tips: try to keep some distance and move in a way that allows you to line targets.

I read somewhere about someone running creatures a certain way that they stopped chasing you or something.. couldnt find the post (is this possible?)

Has anybody else noticed lately that Fan Shot doesn't seem to be working properly on some mobs? I've been trying to use it on banthas lately, and even though I know that I have a few of them within the cone (they are all within 64m of me and tightly grouped, or even directly in line with each other with respect to my line of fire), only one of them actually takes any damage (the one I targeted). I see the "leg hit," etc. messages floating above the others' heads, but their HAM bars don't appear and there are no damage numbers for anybody but the mob that I specifically targeted. This only seems to be an issue with certain kinds of creatures.
I'd report it as a bug, but Fan Shot already wasn't working as it is described.

Yeah Uthyr, it's messed up.
Theoretically, though, the best way to use Fan Shot is to have a pet attack the lair, have the spawns attack the pet, and spam Fan Shot on the Lair.
Otherwise, kiting is your best option. I remember before the buffs and armor, using Fan Shot with a parade of Leviasqualls trailing behind me.

All cone attacks only do damage on creature's aggro'd. First hit with a fanshot on anyone not targeted will do no damage, will however show damage numbers, and unless you're prone/hiding make them aggro.
It was also listed as a bug in a dev chat who knows how long ago -_-

Glad to see it wasn't just me that had this issue.
As for using pets to attack lairs with Fan Shot, yeah, I do that sometimes with my LE Repair Droid and it works great, but because I harvest organics from the creatures I kill (I don't need to grind XP anymore), I'd rather have my harvesting droid out, and he isn't any good as a tank. It also becomes too hard to keep track of who's already been harvested when creatures are dropping like flies. So my approach is usually to take them one at a time by firing a few Stopping Shots and/or Torso Shots (or else a macro of all my available bleeds for high-HAM creatures), then harvest it, then repeat with the next mob, tapping the lair as needed to bring more out. I can usually kill them this way before they can reach me to attack me, and when they do occasionally reach me, my Dodge is so high that they rarely hit me, so I don't really need buffs, armor, or tanks, to hunt.
I love being a Pistoleer.

Yeah, I knew that it only damages aggro'd mobs. The problem I've been noticing though is that it's not just the first shot that causes no damage to all the non-targeted mobs in the cone, it's all the shots I fire. It's just not aggro'ing them, even after several Fan Shots have been fired. And again, it only seems to be certain types of creatures that show this problem.

fanshot used to be a single-target attack.... and stoppingshot was just a slower, souped-up version of fanshot
soon after the disarmingshot2 was "fixed", fanshot was given an AOE cone
it now fires at one target in a 20* cone
there was a bug in which "Fanshot would try to damage corpses in the cone, and when it couldn't, it would pile the damage onto the primary target."
everyone loved this bug, as the damage really piled up
but this also lead to another bug: "If the pistoleer was firing at a target, but there was an additional target behing a wall (and still within the cone), the pistoleer would get a "You cannot see that target" message."
these have all been fixed and now works like this
a good place to use fanshot is in gcw bases, places like the tusken fort, squill cave, faction bases, or grab yourself a tank (player, pet or otherwise) and have it attack a lair and fanshot like crazy
but be careful... some mobs like quenkers are ranged and just shoot from where they spawn, and don't crowd in one, neat little place
places NOT to use fanshot: death watch bunker, geonosian caves, corellian corvette missions, and other high-lvl caves such as the nightsister cave or nightspider cave
it will go through walls (a sideffect of the "cannot see target" fix) and soon you will have more pain than you can handle in places like this
even though it's still somewhat bugged, fanshot is a staple in any pistoleer template because even at the speed cap, against multiple mobs, it is still the most-damage random HAM attack

Very nicely summarized, Kevie. I've seen that diagram before, and it does a great job of explaining the effect.
Unfortunately though, it is still not working like that for me for certain creatures, and this seems to be a recent development (I don't recall having this problem with any mobs as recently as 2 weeks ago).

I tend to grab two missions that are about 500-1000m apart and run back and forth between the two. As I am reaching the second lair, the last of the first lair creatures is dying.

use FS on lower lvl lairs, like quenkers and stuff, completely ignoring the critters and FS the lair, when they run back to fix the lair they take dmg from the FS and then run back too me, the lair goes first then I point blank area the critters to finish them off...they dont have much health left in them from taking random FS dmg, its a vicious cycle that ends up with me getting some cheap and easy exp.

Another good tip is to go into third-person, and run around in an oval. Then fanshot works pretty much like EQ quad-kiting. I find this makes me kind of dizzy, and dodge can throw you off a bit.
