You don't just look at max damage when buying pistols, in my mind damage type is equally or more important than max damage. My suggestion is buy at least an FWG5 with 200+ max damage for the Heat Damage, a DX2 for the acid damage, and a republic blaster for the energy damage. Then you just use whichever pistol is needed for the job.

Pay attention to minimum damage also, because damage mitigation can greatly reduce the maximum damage you can do. Also, rather than just looking at what has higher max damage, find the average damage a weapon does.

And if you plan on doing PvP, I would also suggest a tangle pistol, incase you run into composite armor wearing enemies...and I think the DX2 is good against armor also.

No the acid doesn't go through the armor. Good comp has a 60% acid resistance, but being that the DX2 has a close min/max damage it does well to reduce the effects of mitigation. Stun damage goes right through comp bypassing the armor completely only leaving you with the mitigation to deal with. Both the Tangle and DX2 are best used at short range.

Forgive the dumb question...but I'm a relative noob as well....

You say FWG5 is good for Heat, DX2 gives Acid damage, and republic blasters give energy damage...

My question is...in what situations do you use each?

Well...against critters and enemy NPC's, you should examine, and see what their vulnerabilities are. That should tell you what pistol to use (A lot of creatures I see have vulnerability to stun, but most tangles are slow, so as long as the thing isn't resistant to another damage type, i try to use a faster weapon, hopefully with higher damage).

Against enemy players...kinda depends on their armor (especially composite). Composite armor is vulnerable to stun, and has high resistances for most other damage types, so a tangle is probably your best bet (though I read that DX2 is also good against composite because of armor piercing, but i'm not certain).
