The best I've been able to get a scope down to is 1 HAM. And that was with materials with stats of about 975 and higher.
I've yet to see a 0 HAM scope and I don't think I ever will. The stats would have to be 1000 each if the current maths is correct.
The problem is finding a weaponsmith with all 12 experimentation points and the right equipment. Since it tales the 10 points gained at master to get down to 1 HAM, you only get a very small bonus. The extra two points make it worthwhile.
Make sure it's experimented for HAM first and you've got a winner.

What is the deal with these? I bought a few, and I think they are a bit better, but my brain might just be compensating for the fact that they are about 2-5k more than regular weapons of the same type. The guy told me that they do something with the range, but I didn't quite get the whole jist of it.

The scope is an additional component that enhance the range modifiersof weapon, at a little HAM cost.
If it's well made, it won't be more than 5 points more on the HAM cost. You should definitly not buy another republic that has no scope integrated, since this pistolhas a terrible -20 or such in "ideal range" by design.
There's another optional component, the "stock", that adds damage, but unfortunately not for pistols.

A master smith can make a 0 HAM scope if he can get the right rescources. My guy had a pile of these made and every gun I had him make for me included a scope. Sadly he has left the game.

I've been giving more thought to scopes too, especially considering the highly defensive templates.

I'm guessing you get better accuracy with scopes, but I've never had a weapon with a scope, so I can't be too certain.

Don't forget, when the weaponsmith is crafting the components, such as scopes and barrels, he can choose from about 8 different graphic designs for the component. On the final screen for customizing the component, there is a pull-down menu in the upper left corner of the window that let's you choose the look of the component. I've made a D18 pistol before with a big shiny silver ported barrel on the end, and a long shiny silver scope on top; the components show up on some of the weapons when you craft them. Some weapons, like the scout blaster, don't show these graphics, though. Nothing looks quite as goofy as a DL44 pistol with a telescopic rifle scope on top of it, that's actually bigger than the gun.

Both my Krayt FWG's have the giant scope on em, it's as long as the gun and looks pretty nifty, IMO.

We're on diff servers, head to SWGCraft.com and check the rescource spawns on Valcyn. Either we get better rescources than you, or he was a better smith. ( had more experimentaion tapes/plates than you do, as that's what it all comes down to, really).
We did get a spawn of some insanely good green stone for this and my understanding is that this is quite often the stopper on Adv. scopes.

Scopes rock.
I just wish other people could see how cool my dx2 and my metal dl44 look with a scope and advanced barrels.
