Every once in a while Ill get combat spam that reads:

You use such-and-such shot on a creature for X points of damage, but he evades it.

What just occured?

Pretty much what it says. NPCs and mobs get dodges evades and blocks. Sometimes they get to use them and that stops your attack.

If he dodged or evaded it, why did it do damage?

It's just the reporting of how much you "would have done". I think they just put it in there to taunt us, personally hehe

But what it does is counts as a 'hit' even though it doesn't do any real damage to them. Probably how the combat algorithms work.
