I just looted a geonscian pistol from the lab and it has a posion dot. Does the dot go off automatically or is there some kinda hot key to need to make to make it "proc"

It will stick automatically. The potency is what determines the stick rate. A DOT with 50% potency will need quite a few shots before it sticks. A DOT with 200% potency will stick right away.
