Thread: Newbie Pistoler Question

I've still got quite a ways to go before it matters in any way, but I like to plan ahead so I'm working for something instead of just collecting random xp with no direction in mind.

I'm reading thread after thread in this forum about how the pistoleer profession pretty much sucks. It's definitely the direction I want to go, but if the profession sucks that bad I may have to rethink my plan. I'm not the fastest leveler in the world, so it's probably not something I even need to worry about for a few weeks (or more).

Question(s): Does the pistoleer profession (still) suck? Is the profession likely to get better before I even get there?

well, I dont think it sucks at all...you may have problems soloing very high end content and in groups a rifleman or swordsman will usually out damage you...

Having said that I still think all the normal content in the game is open to pistoleers, and I have fun playing this profession as much as anyone else does playing a jedi, or FOTM.

Things will change for the pistoleer, but probably not before you hit master. The combat revamp is gearing up but will still take a little while. That is a good thing since we will be testing and tweaking as much as possible to get everything well balanced.

OK, that is very excellent to hear. I'm glad I asked. Thank you very much.

By itself, it does indeed. When coupled with smuggler and/or Bounty Hunter pistol lines, it is superior to all - why I say superior rather than equal is in regards to pvp. It targets random pools with its most powerful attacks, yet can overcome someone spamming a mind attack special (you are weakest in your mind pool in nearly 100% of your encounters).

Pistoleer at this moment in time, at the master level, has 3-4 specials that are of value if you are only a master pistoleer.

Those being Fanshot, Stopping Shot, MeleeeDefense1 (meleeKD). Arguablly, Healtshot3 - if you have the speed cap its better than healtshot2, which you get in the marksman tree.

If you pickup smugglers dirty fighting or bounty hunters pistols, the only special you will use from master pistoleer is fanshot, and not often.

I am a master pistoleer/teras kasi/smuggler and find pistols to be very effective in pvp as no temaplte other than Jedi can beat it, and decent in pve. You will suffer against high end mobs in pve - the days of soloing krayt dragons with them are pretty much over. Super battle droids, nightsister elders, etc. will all kick your butt if you attempt to use pistols against them.

Last Ditch from smuggler is the most powerful pistol special in the game, a chance to land the stun state and attacks a random pool. Eye shot from smuggler can target the mind pool, which would also be nifty.

There are many cominations and things to talk about when it comes to pistols, but in short, they are not as bad as people make them out to be. You just have to pickup a supplimental line, and learn about this games combat system. Essentially you need it for speed and accuracy and then smuggler/Bh to output damage.

Most people prefer to pickup a prof that can target mind so they can spam one special over and over rather than really learn some good fightin' techniques.

It doesn't suck-suck. However, if pistoleer was going to be the only elite-combat profession you planned on picking up, yes you will be at a huge disadvantage against other players. You'll need to learn portions of at least 1-2 other elite professions to make pistoleer what you probably expect it to be. The problem comes with money. Yes, you can still get good money in the game, but the average $ per hour you'll make vs. a TKM will be a lot less. That should change post revamp, but post revamp we won't be able to solo jantas anyway due to HAM & dmg changes, so we loose out either way. Bottom line, I love using pistols and that's why I like being a pistoleer. Go with the role you'd like.
