I am sure that you see a lot of posts from people contemplating returning and this is yet another. When I left months ago I was a Master Pistoleer and TK Master. I spent some time reading up and it does not seem like that is as attractive a combination as it used to be. Pistol was always my first love and I would like to stick with that if possible. I have respec available and would like know a little the relative effectiveness ofmaybe combining doctor or combat medic with pistol. I also have some old armor that I can apparently convert. One is marauder and I do not recall the other. Any thoughts?

Either picking up CM or parts of CM + Doc definitely works. Our new corr's been using Master Pistoleer + a mix of doc and CM for ages now and he's no fun in duels after putting you on fire and great fun in hunts as the heals of his hits you. The additional debuffs of CM, notably electrolyte drain which is a snare with a kickass duration, enhances the crowd control aspect of pistoleer immensely.
Another option is BH skills. The entire profession now gives only general weapon mods which means every single box will benefit your pistoleering some. The extra defenses you get aren't half bad either, and duelist stance is like a ranged weapon low-powered CoB. With MBH/MP you have enough for branch of CM aswell. Personally, I went MBH/MP + 0004 CM, to get E-drain, and anattack speed debuff (great for lowering the DPS on single boss mobs) and paralyze for when getting him OFF you is vital.
I'd recommend shifting through this thread looking for idea's. There's an entire section with secondary professions

I'd consider master bounty hunter if I were you... it gives you a little bonus to crowd control with sprayshot... and also gives you some high damage attacks (critical and torso shots)

Thanks much for the replies. I had not really considered bounty hunter but will look at that. I am guessing that I only get the one respec. I want to make sure that it is something I will enjoy playing. Thanks also for the link to the thread on post-CU pistoleer. Very helpful.
If I could add another question, I have a set of composite armor that I can no longer equip. I get a "convert" option that indicates that it will change to either reconnaisance armor or assaultarmor. I have no idea what to do about this. I am guessing that reconnaisance issomething like teh old tantel and the other is the present equivalent of composite? It looks like Master Pistoleer/Master Bounty Hunter confers 100% mitigation for both types. Is it still heavy=better?
I also have a bunch of old pistols (including a couple of FWGs. It looks like the maximum damage is the biggest factor. What is a good upper damage range? I am hoping I do not have to replace weapons immediately because my house (and the 3 sets of armor, clothes and all my weapons) is evidently long gone and I only have about 600k. What do quality pistols run? (I am on eclipse if that is important).

A couple I like are
MP / MCM / Doc4000 - lots of nice CM DoTs and debuffs and paralyze with great heals
MP / MD / CM4000 - Self buffs (speeeeed), useful Rezz, great cures, great heals
and my current version
MP / CM4404 / Doc4014 - Nice balance of both sets of abilities and easy to switch to mastery of either medical prof with just a few days work.
All of the above templates give you the heals from hell. You can pretty much outheal anything that jumps you and are a great asset in groups depending on how you play it.

Actually you have 3 weeks plus a 6 day extension after you first log in after the CUin which you can respec as many times as you want. If you've just come back, you have plenty of time to mess with different templates to see what you like. Just keep in mind the /respec option is on a 12 hour timer (which seems to get paused when the servers are down).

In general:
- Recon gives you the best protection against energy damage, and the worst protection against kinetic.
- Assault gives you the best protection against kinetic, and the worst protection against energy.
- Battle is balanced. It gives you the same protection against energy and kinetic, but it doesn't protect you against energy as well as Recon, and it doesn't protectyou against kinetic as well as Assault.
Note that, strictly speaking, these comparisons only apply to three suits of armor crafted by the same AS, with same-quality resources. What I mean is that Assault armor crafted by a certain AS with certain resourcesmay offer better energy protection than Recon armor crafted by another AS with different resources.
Ubese is now considered as Recon armor, Composite is now considered as Assault, and Padded is now considered as Battle (I don't remember about Chitin, Tantel, Bone, or Marauder).
As a Master Pistoleer/MBH, you would be able to use Recon and Assault without any encumbrance.
