Hi all,

I'm currently a ranger and I'm trying to decide what is the best ranged weapon specialization to go for. I'm mainly looking for something that is going to allow me to hunt solo. I'm not interested in PvP. Is pistoleer a good idea? I don't know much at all about the profession but I would like your input. I am currently atPistols IV in the Marksman tree andprefer my pistols to my rifles. Is it worth going for Pistoleer or should I go elsewhere?

Hi

I've been a Pistoleer/Ranger on Chilastra for about 2 months. Although I'm not truly either a pistoleer or ranger. I am Ranger 0040, pistoleer 0043, BH 0040. The Bounty Hunter is great because it has pistol specials that can be invaluable when hunting solo, especially the DOT shots. It also allows you the use of the Scatter pistol. In Pistoleer the last 2 columns give you the most bang for your hot and well as Melee defenses, good for tanking lairs.

With this format I am able to take pretty much any lair in the game (doc buffed of course, though many with only current food buffs, and good armor.)

Good luck with what ever choices you make. And Good Hunting!

Troll through these forums, the consensus I have gatheredis basicly this: "We like pistols not because it is any good but because... Hell I don't even have a valid reason why I still have pistols." Maybe we all keep it waiting for a bone to be thrown to our dog asses. Maybe we all see the potential. Maybe we just like to torture ourselves. Maybe we like being the worst prof in the game. Maybe you should go Rifleman.

I've only just started Pistoleer so can't give you much insight there, but while hologrinding I did TKA and Ranger together and I thought that was a great combination. Once I open my slot I may actually go back to TKA/Ranger because I had so much fun levelling them together.

On a side note: TKA really seems way overpowered from a PvE prospective (like most people would probably agree) so I dont know if it will be nerfed or anything. However, to give you an idea about what you can dowith this combo, you can take out a lair of Pikets on Dant in under 2 min, pick up 9k credits, 40k xp, and 600+ herb meat.

Pistoleer really blows right now. I got some TKA to stack the defenses with my pistol abilities, but now I use TKA almost exclusively because it's so powerful. I can easily solo 6 Nightsisters unarmed, but I would have some difficulty killing 3 with pistols. Maybe I suck or have bad equipment, but I think the problem is with the profession.

Pistoleer is still fun though. It's much more challenging, and it takes a lot longer to kill things. You have to be quick and chose your specials and weapons wisely if you want to do well. With TKA you just hit KD then spam Unarmed Hit 3, and with Rifleman I hear you just use Strafing Shot? and Head Shot 3.

To start I'm master ranger master pistoleer.

This decision depends on your play style. Their are those that will attest to riflman/ranger and those to pistoleer/ranger. But they are both effective if used correctly, because they are both viable means of combat for ranger. It seems like you already prefer pistols to rifles though. The rifleman ranger stays back at a distance trying to keep hiddin, and trying to keep the creatures from ever running up on him. Cause if they do it's bad news most of the time. But a good rifleman can drop a creature before it runs up. I started this route when working up through scout and into ranger.

The pistoleer on the other hand, is more of a close up run around stay mobile fighter. We tend to sneak up into close range undetected. Then at optimal range, usualy around 30m, start at it. But don't stay sill, we have to move about run around, use our specials, those that work, and traps if needed. The higher you go in pistoleer the better your accuracy is while moving. Because that is how I play, on the move, I worked up the marksman line a couple box first. This gives us the accuracy bonusses while running to stay accurate while running about. I prefer to cirle my prey.

So yes, they are a great combo. I would say the majority of good long time rangers are rifleman, pistoleers, and TK.

I've always been a Master Ranger/Master Pistoleer. It was my goal from when I first started live after I finished up in Beta. it works well, but only if you have someone else along who can provide tanking ability(be it themselves or with pets). The problem is alone, you simply lack the firepower to be able to solo, and quickly solo, the biggest creatures(which is what you need since its hard enough trying to harvest decent quantities of animal resources as is).

In short, its fun, I'd never give up either, but I hope you can handle depression well.
