That's not entirely true. The targets don't have to be in a direct line, but they DO have to be very very closely bunched together.

I find on Sharnaff and Huurton Huntress' missions, standing about 30 meters from the lair and constantly nailing that with fan shot works very well. You'll end up with nearly the entire lair having spawned and attacking you, but if buffed you can take the damage. What happens is groups of those surrounding you run back towards the lair to heal it, and your fanshot, in addition to always targeting the one standing in front of you, also hits those healing the lair. The result is fan shot actually hits multiple targets, decreasing the time it takes to kill a lair's worth of spawns, and those running away aren't hitting you for damage. I've had seven creatures of eight run back to the lair, hitting most of them with my fanshot. I hope this helps.

The farther you are from the mobs the wider the cone is. I regularly use fanshot to take down 3 to 6 stormtroopers at a time. Getting in the right postion helps alot.

So, I've been steadily levelling up Pistoleer...I did like everyone told me, and went up the Techniques line first.
I'm currently 0/1/4/3...and I havea fewquestions:
First, what is the 'best' line to go up next? I am already a Master Fencer (planning on dropping after Mastering Pistoleer), so I don't need the +dodge right now...which is why I started the Marksmanship line. Does that sound right?
Secondly (and more importantly), What am I doing wrong with Fanshot? It doesn't appear to be hitting as an AoE at all! I've read the posts about its usefullness, and I'm just not seeing it

Yes, I seem to aggro everything on my screen when I first use it, but zero damage is done...I understand it's a 'cone' attack...not like the Fencer AoEs which hit everything around you...but even when I try and line up the mobs, it isn't hitting them!I always hunt fully Doc buffed on Dant (Huurton Huntresses), and the XP seems to be faster when I just kneel and take the damage, rather than run around...in that case, the AI causes the mobs to encircle you...thus making a cone AoE attack useless anyways.
Is there a better mob to hunt on another planet? Should I change my tactics? Any help is greatly appreciated!

the fanshot is not a cone shot per say...it'll hit multiple targest in a direct line. so position yourself so more than one of your target is in a line with your fire, and fan away. if they're standing side by side in front of u, i will hit only one (plus whatever may be behind it). hope that helps u

I got master pistoleer a month before xmas. What helped me so much was fanshot. The AoE was pretty big and worked well. Then I went on a combat hiatus. I did 5-6 non combat profs. Always keeping pistoleer. So just last week I decided to go back to combat and started smuggler. I agree that fanshot is different now. It seems that way anyway. I could be wrong. I find it to be a horrible shot and now I constantly use body shot 3 to target the health bar.

I've always wanted to try that, but even fighting one Stormie they always nail me with Advanced Strafe for (at least) 1k damage. It's rather painful

fanshot is so bugged. When it does work, it supposed to hit multi targets. but a few times i seen it hit 1 target multiple times in a group of multiple targets.
this happend at fort tusken... when about 10 or so tuskens are tightly packed together, fan shot targetted ONLY 1 tusken and did 10 or so hits on it. so i did like 10-15000k of damage on one target. hahah only thing is it because its random HAM dmg, it hardly kills the target. heh but its major dmg anyhow. i wouldnt mind this dmg as opposed to multi-targets.

stopping shot does so much more damage to a single target. I never realized fan shot actually fired a fan, until later...lol

It also has a tendency to go through walls every now and again. You'll never actually hit a target through a wall, but you'll see in the Combat Log that you missed the target. That of course causes them to aggro you and search for a way into the same room as you.
