AP= armor piercing

the number quantifies how "strong" the armor piercing ability of any weapon is. SWG uses a three tiered armor rating ( AR ) system, AR0 is naked, or just clothes. AR1 is personal armor, of any kind. Also called Light. AP2 found on critters or players wearing armor and a personal shield generator, also called Medium and AR3, found on things like the AT-ST walker, also called heavy.

The damage dealt by your weapon is modified based on the amount of armor it has to cut thru, if the AP value on your weapon is equal to or excedes the AR value of your target you suffer no reduction in damage. ( if your AP is higher than your target's AR you actually do extra damage). If your weapon's AP value is lower than your target's AR value your damage will be reduced by %50 for each "layer" of armor it has to bypass.

so....

You use a DX2, AP rating of 1, against a target with an AR of 1= Normal damage.

You use the same DX2 against an AR2 target and hit for 100 points unadjusted. The 100 is reduced by %50 by passing thru the extra layer of armor. ( AP1 vs AR2)

You use an FWG ,AR0, against a chicken walker, AR3, and hit for an unadjusted 100 points in damage. The first "layer" drops that damage to 50, the second "layer" drops it another %50 to 25 and the third to 12.5 or 13 points of damage.

I could go into more detail, but you got eyes, look it up man

Note that the example of the Medium AP Power Hammer striking the Bone Gloves makes it clear that AP weapons are supposed to get bonus damage against Vulnerable targets. However there is a bug in the game that negates this bonus damage whenever an AP weapon strikes a target that has a specific Vulnerability to its damage type.
