Thread: Mitigation, Marksmanship, and the new Pistol... just a thought...

I thought of this upon hearing about the new Pistol, the Geonosian Sonic Blaster, and I thought I'd get some more opinions on it.

The Devs are trying to do two things: 1. make being a master of a profession worth it and special, 2. still encourage some dabbling so that there is diversity between each player's skills. Now, we saw how they handled this with the Creature Handler profession, and I think they did a great job with it. The dabbling that was going on with CH's was ridiculous, and it made pets a necessity. So, they re-arranged the skills, skill mods, etc, so that it was much much more worth your time to get to Master CH than it was to dabble.

The best line in Pistoleer is, by far, the Techniques line. The tree has four special moves in it, and all of our Defense vs. State skill mods. True, Disarming Shot doesn't work right and Double Tap sucks, but Stopping Shot and Fan Shot are great. Techniques is what almost every dabbler will get, perhaps with a few skills in Stances for the speed mod. Even people, who want to master Pistoleer, tend to go up Techniques first, beacause of how good Fan Shot is at raking in the XP.

Stances? Good for the speed skill mods, and Pistol Melee Defense 1 is very nice (PMD2 would be nice if it wasn't BROKEN). Grips? Dodge is wonderful, Body Shot 3 could be either a bit more powerful, a bit faster, or have a bit lower HAM cost, the two Point Blank skills are... meh.. no big deal. Marksmanship? Well, it's tough to tell how well the accuracy skill mods even work (at least it is for me), but overall this is probably the weakest line.

Now, in order to make mastering a profession more worth it (along with other reasons we don't really know much about yet) the Devs introduced Mitigation. They put Mitigation 3 in the Master skill-box, which is where it definitely belongs. Yet, they put Mitigation 1 and Mitigation 2 in the Techniques line.... Wouldn't it make more sense to put these somewhere else? Techniques is already the best line, so it would only make sense to put the new addition into a different line to make it more desire-able. Wouldn't you be more inclined to get a couple of the Marksmanship or Grips skills earlier on if that's where they put the Mitigation?

Well, alright, we didn'tthink much about it at the time. Now, we've got the new Geonosian Sonic Blaster coming. I'm very very excited to use this gun! Yet, once again, the Devs failed to realize their own purposes..... and they put the certification at Techniques 2. The Techniques line thus gains yet one more reason to be called the best line in our profession! Look at poor Marksmanship! Sitting there, looking so barren with just a couple skill-mods! Or look at Grips, with just Dodge, the semi-useful Body Shot 3, and the "meh" Point Blank skills! Cripes!

The Devs need to stop stacking up the new, and great, additions to our profession in the skill line that is alread considered the best! Putting both Mitigation and the new Pistol cert in the Techniques line only overly encourages dabbling in the way it was done with the CH profession. These new additions need to be spread out better, so as to make the profession as a WHOLE more desire-able, instead of just making one skill line more desire-able. Move either Mitigation, or the new Pistol cert over to Marksmanship. Any new additions that come our way, need to have their placement well thought out, so they don't over-stack any one skill line.

I'm sure we're probably not the only profession that suffers from this, but I think that we need to make the Devs start thinking harder about where they put new skills and certifications. Encouraging dabbling is ok, but make so dabblers think "well I want Techniques 3, Marksmanship 2, and Stances 2." Instead of "all I need is Techniques 4 and Stances 2, sweet!"

I've been thinking the same thing ever since the Geonsian Sonic Blaster was revealed. Put it in marksmanship....not techniques. Something needs to be changed.

Gotta agree with you on this one. Spread the skills out or you are in danger of no-one getting Master Title in anything (other than for Holo grinding reasons) and just getting 1 or 2 skill trees in 10 different proffessions for max bonuses etc...

nice post.

Yeah. The new pistol should go in the Marksmanship line for sure. Mitigation should go in the Grips line.

Well, I'm glad people agree with me; I just hope the Devs actually read our forum and agree too. Though, that may be hoping against hope!

Well apprently I am going to be the only one that disagrees with you, in one small part,here are my reasons;

I believe this pistol is in the right line, if its the most popular so be it, let more people enjoy this pistol, its not an uber pistol, although I do think many more pistols are eventually coming out, make better pistols go into the other lines, and make a better one for master. Master should be something, and by that I mean the devs need to be original and make all the work you put in a profession pay off, with outstanding skills and weapons and certs at the master level. most of the times the devs hear our crys/complaints and what they to do please the community is move something from one tier and bump it up to the master level?? this is NOT making the master level more desirable it, all your doing is stealing from another tree. Again why make this game harder and less desirable? why ruin a popular tree? all the trees in pistoleer have good bonuses and compliment every profession. I believe or atleast I hope that every tree will get its own weapon. this one goes in the tech tree, let it be, worry about something else, like why are specials do nothing of what the description reads. anyway those are my two credits.

I agree with both Kaern Legorah and Castigula. Both of you have very good points. I think any addition they do to our trees should be well thought out but of course as we have heard from the DEVs in other posts on this forum that what we hear is usually not the whole picture or even will come to past if things change on the way.

With the new pistol on TC why do you think its on TC and not in live yet. Because it is being tested and like alot of things on TC they dont make it tolive. If you are complaining it is in the wrong tree, wouldnt it be best to head over to the TC forum and post there? Sorry to come off harsh I dont mean to.

I just hope we get more then just this one pistol I would love to see a few more scattered about our treesand a nice pistol for Master Box since the DX2 at Novice isdoable if you get a good one.
