Thread: Pistol vs. Armor
Is takeing 100+ damage to a ham pool a normal downfall to the profession? Should i run around? Should i go prone? Or take the plumit and invest into some good armors. Personaly i think the armor will get better in time as the armor smiths get more experinced and get better ores, but more the encumbrances are litteraly killing me.
Also for melee defence, dos ethis actually knock down the character like the teris kasi skill? Sorry for my ignorance, but i havent reached it yet.
Thanks all

Yes, Pistol Melee Defense 1 is a knockdown + random HAM damage.
PIstol users take (I think I recall reading) 1.2x more melee damage than if youchangeto melee attacks (unarmed, melee weapon, etc.) (carbine and rifle have even higher multipliers)
Experiement with starting prone, using warning shot, knockdown, kiting, stacking bleeds, etc., before taking the armor plunge. If you don't already, you should consider gett first aid and organic chem to craft stim Bs and have a good supply each time you go out to XP. It can really speed up overall XP time.
Some mobs are just hard to kill, so if you think you're taking too much melee damage, try to find another mob. I think Crazed Durni's, for instance, after diseased bocats, were a "kill before they reach me" type mob, and OK XP early on. That's just an example, every planet seems to have a pretty good selection.Of course, when I XP'd it was langlatch then pistolwhip mobs, so things have changed a bit (or will soon).
I never used to wear armor, but I've found asetup that I like the look of and find very useful for PvM. I'm wearing chitin bracers, chitin boots, and chitin pants. The bracers block some health/torso damage and look cool, withoutbeingmuch encumberance, and the boots and pants provide maximum protection to my action pool (important because my FWG5 eats action for breakfast when I'm not using an actioncostpowerup). I don't find that I need to protect my mind pool so much, except against rifle and sword using NPCs, so I very rarely use a helmet. I do have the full suit of armor - I just don't wear it most of the time.
I chose chitin for three reasons - first, it provides good protection for PvM, second, it looks good on me, and third, it was free from a friend ^^
You can use tactics to substitute very well for armor - usually even though I wear armor I try to avoid directly tanking most creatures. A probot or creature pet makes a much better tank than I do anyway, and well-done kiting, of course, means you don't take damage. Another good trick is to learn to use warning shot, or get trapping 3 and trapping 4 from the scout profession (snare and root traps).
I found amour to be pretty much compulsory on treks to advanced planets. That is if you don't have a pet to tank for you. Creatures there are truly devastating to your health. With a good set of armour you can actually survive encounters that would mean certain death without solid protection. The assumption however, is that you should have a medic or a doc with you.In that case, the penalities to your stats that your armour imposes are pretty much irrelevant.
The only problem is, that you must pretty much repair/replace your entire armour after a few hour trek. I guess it's partially to the fact that you get brown spots on your pants ![]()

Personally I always thought armor was a waste, due to the stat loss... but as you said it might become more worthwhile to wear eventually.
And yes, Pistol Melee Defense 1 is an attack that can knock down a character or mob. Some are harder to knock down then others though... and some are totally immune to being knocked down. Earlier I read that on test center they have cranked up the Action cost to 150 per pistol whip though, so it can't be spammed an more.
I'm not sure what you meant with the damage question -- are you referring to the damage other mobs are doing to you, or the damage you are doing to yourself when you use specials?
If you're fighting mainly humanoid characters with range- definately go prone, there's almost no reason not to.
If you're fighting mainly creatures then definately dont go prone(or kip-up/roll before they get to you).
Armor is a delicate choice. I always see people running around in full suits of armor and wonder how they do it. I sort of took a compromise, I wear armor leggings and boots to protect my action pool(since I use that the most), and I wear gloves just so there is something protecting the body.
No helmet to protect my mind pool, Im a Zabrak and I have a small mind pool as it is so it's not worth the stat loss, plus I like to keep the horns showing
Dont forget about personal shields too, if you're going against ranged enemies. They burn out kind of fast but dont cause any stat loss.
Basically in my oppinion i think no armor isn't good, and full armor isn't good- try to pick somewhere in between. Also, when I have to rest from a really nasty fight, I take off all my armor to regen faster...it's not very pretty sitting there pantsless but it's better than waiting for double the time.
Ps- This is all moot if you can find some really great armor with very low stat loss and good protection
Yes i was referring to the damage i take from mobs, unrealted to ham pool drains.
