Hey everyone,
I've got a question I'm hoping some of youveteran pistoleers can answer for me. I'm starting a new RP character & here's the question. Is Master Pistoleer by itself a decent combat profession? My future template is going to be
Master Architect
Master Artisan
Master Pistoleer
Merchant 0-3-0-0
I don't PvP, I PvE only for creatures around my harvestors & things thatattack me while zooming about. I do have a BE CH Gurreck tank I use to draw aggro so that's not an issue either. Pistols was the first combat profession I ever tried almost a year ago, it was fun, but I had no idea on how to play as this was my first MMORPG. Will this profession allow me to defend myself w/o having to stack templates for speed? As you can see I have 0 skill points left over to dabble in. Eventually I will buy CAfor Pistol Speed, but that won't be until I'm an established Architect. Thanks in advance gunslingers!

I'm doing sorta the same thing, but with Doctor and pistols. I _want_ the pistols, but I can't help but wonder if I'm cutting off my own legs. Are swords/tkm only slightly better or are pistols just a poor choice for PvE?

I played architect + master pistoleer for a while and I can honestly say that master pistoleer isn't that good on itself. There are many better, functioning professions. Master Pistoleer need more speed from bounty hunter to become at least ok. Don't blame me if you find MP not to work as well as you hoped.
On the other hand if you like the idea of being a pistoleer, try it! I've have been it since I started out and have had lots of fun with it. There are loads of pistols to choose from and you can build on MP with bounty hunter, smuggler or stack defenses with TK, Fencer etc. If you want to try a little more fighting in the future it's a nice start with many options. And of course it's very Star Warsy!
So.. If you're RP and not going into PvP, pistoleer should be a nice choice although not the most practical in terms of dealing out damage.

For now, TKA is the best to go standalone.
With some speed tapes, Pistoleer would not be that bad, though....
Unless there a are lot of 4k+ mobs around your harvs don't worry.

I dont know if this helps you guys any....but if you can afford the points, I would definatley go TKM. It helps you defeat things that you cannot normally beat with Pistols. I know this is just my opinion, but I love TK, and if ya can, give it a try.

Thanks for the replies guys/girls. I've already done a majority of combat. Actually that's all I did from the instant I signed up. I started Architect to try something different & actually be able to help my guild/community.
The main concern though is if Pistols is strong enough for basic defense. i.e. Valyrians(sp?), Thugs, Desert Marksman, the occasional Kussack or Pirates on Lok. I also have a BE Gurreck pet to take care of tanking for me so TKM isn't an option. I already mastered TKM 3 times. lol
Thanks again Gunslingers!

I am currently a Master Pistoleer and Master Doc and I have no problem killing things. I have not gone after the big game but I have no problem with most of the creatures. I am usually buffed as I get them for free so I do not worry too much about most creatures you would run into. I would also consider some armor though.

Master pistol/Doc is my build of choice, simply because I love the flexibility of it.
Without at least nov medic there could be times it could get tight, you list some MOB's with ranged attacks as some you might want to be able to tussel with so a pet tank might not be everything. Dodge pizza is your friend here ( pikkatta pie).
I think with current, state of the art equipment ( the kind a good architect can afford
) you can do just fine with pistoleer only under the circumstances you describe. I regularly log my pistol/doc into our player city on Lok and clean out the trash unbuffed and unarmored. Kusacs, marooned pirates, perleks, you gotta take some time with the nasty ones and you will have to learn your limits but it sounds like exactly what you are lookin for.
Especially if you want to tie pistols into the RP aspect, and who wouldn't? Pistols are just that cool

as a defensive profession, i think this is a good choice.
You may not deal lots of damage like a rifleman, but you are able to deal them from long and short range.
That means that you can hit the mob before it hits you (except if it's got a ranged attack) and you can decently hit it when it's in melee range. You've got decent defenses to deal with the most common mobs.
On the opposite way, you'll be weak on the offensive side, you mentionned you were not a pvper, so let's not talk about that, but if you intended to go and share a cup of tea with NightSisters, you can forget it. You don't deal the good damage types, and you don't deal enough DPS to expect so survive the encounter.
So, what conclusion can you draw?
If you really intend to use Pistoleer to defend yourself while going to your harvesters and factories, and occasionnaly go on with your guild/friends on hunting parties, that's fine, you'll have good chances not to die. If you intend to use Pistoleer for any other purpose (pvp, loot hunting, solo hunting...) you'd better take some dabbling skills around, like the Desperado line from BH, the dodge line from fencer maybe the dirty fighting line from smuggler or even the novice commando ti deak blast damage.
That's my opinion, if i did say something wrong please fellow brothers in arms correct me.

My main toon is a Pistoleer/Doc and it seems to work ok in most situations...yeah your not going to march into the death watch bunker and own the place, but most of the stuff picking over your harvester can be beaten back...
Something to think on, if you are just using it for survival while checking harvs and such Pistoleers do get a pretty good dodge modifier and we have very high KD defense...KD is the only thing keeping you from getting to your vehicle for a speedy getaway, and dodging is nice to avoid a few hits while trying to check harvs.
Soon...I hope we start the CU soon. Coding is being done and Sandbox should be opening soon.

Thanks everyone for the replies! I finally got my forum account reactivated. Everyone gave a decent pro/con opinion of pistols. I believe I'm going to try it out! Thanks a bunch again!
