Kiting is the process of using ranged attacks to kill a creature/npc while running away from it to avoid its attacks.

A Kite is a large object connected to a string that sails in the air.

Kiting can often be the difference between getting cloned and getting xp. Many use it to minimize damage to themselves or to tackle creatures that they normally shouldn't be able to handle.

For example, I maximized my novice scout terrain negotiation so that I could run up hills at close to my normal running speed. Occasionaly, I'll pick a creature that cons red butdoes not pack -- that is important -- and shoot it from my maximum distance with health shot. The Pistoleer helath shot wounds it and makes it bleed. As it runs after me (bleeding the whole way), I put it on autorun and just run away firing. I'll negotiate up hills, into ravines, accross flat ground, etc. The combination of bleeding and getting hit by pistol fire will often bring it down -- unless you get killed of course.

The term comes from leading the creature around on a "string" like a kite.

Actually its from old mud games and is derived from (K)illing (I)n (T)ransit, but the kite metaphor works too.

I think I like Killing In Transit much better. Sounds less like a day in the park and more like a world of hurt...
