Thread: Fan Shot Overrated
I recently became a pistoleer b/c i'm a sucker holo-gimp and based on advice in the forums did the tree to get fan shot first. Big mistake. When hunting solo you need to target a single HAM pool to take something down quickly and fan shot targets a random HAM pool making it useful mainly in group hunting or some pvp situations. I think going for body shot 3 is ultimately more useful for leveling.
I usually start with the bleeds, peace and run about 90m away until they start ticking. When the mob/npc goes agro and gets in range I close in while spamming body shot. When within range I do pistol whip for the knockdown and start back up on the body shot spamming. Works well with white and yellow cons. On red npc cons I will let them get in range until they go prone and then run out of range. They stay prone until the bleeds tick again. You can do this repeatedly until they are at a more manageable HAM level.
The tree with fan shot is my second choice mainly for damage mitigation 2 at the 3rd level.
Thoughts? Hope this has helped my fellow holo-gimps entering the wonderful world of Pistoleer.

Over-rated? Squill Cave, Tatooine. A group of 10 players (including myself a 2-2-4-4 Pistoleer) with 3 TKA's and a Heavy Swordsman using a Powerhammer (I don't remember what anyone else was). Who raked in the most xp? Why.... me! I pulled in about 20k Pistol XP per room.
How did it go down? The melee'ers and any pets keep the Squills busy and in a tight little group. I stand back and hit FanShot once and hit them all for about 1k damage on average. Since everybody is concentrating on one or two Squills, the others get killed almost purely by me. I'd get 2k xp off of one or two Squills, and over 4k off the ones that I polished off on my own. Get us in a room with 8 Squills, and the xp just rolls right in.
Now, for solo-ing, I'd still rather use FanShot because it has a very low delay and it hits for pretty nice damage. Yes, it does hit a random HAM, but the faster firing rate and the damage make it quite worth it. But, then again, as a Smuggler, I just LowBlow then PanicShot right off the bat and all my attacks do quite a bit more damage ![]()
So, yes, FanShot is best to use in groups, but it's worth your time to find a group for (and I personally would rather solo, but I get far more xp with a group using FanShot).

Don't the other mobs who get hit by your fanshot come after you? From what I've seen in pve if the groups concentrating on one mob and I deal any damage to any other mob who's aggro'd on the tanks but not being attacked by them then they turn around and attack me (which results in pasted pistolier).
stopping shot is also overrated. again does random HAM damage and the time delay on it is a killer.
When I level up I tend to solo. It drives me nuts to have to wait around for other people. There is always that one guy who keeps saying "Wait my friend is almost here."

20k pistol xp per room is pretty good, but if you look at the time it takes to form the group, goto the caves, kill mobs with breaks in between for everyone to heal, I think for total time online you can't do better than going out to where the krayts are and killing everything but krayts.
I love to find a couple rouge bantha spawns right next to each other and go prone. 2 body shots = dead bantha. Sure, I only get 900xp, but it's constant. You can kill 2-3 banthas a minute without them ever going agro and only having to take brief breaks to take a stim.

I almost never have that problem when I have my probot tanking for me, except when something spawns in the line of fire and gets hit before it can aggro on the probot.

They don't usually come after me. If they're busy fighting a pet or a player tank (TKA, Fencer, Pikeman, etc) then they just ignore me the vast majority of the time. Every now and again one will break off and come after me, but a quick Pistol Whip shuts 'em up pretty quick
Now, if the pet/tank gets incapped and you hit with a FanShot then you're in BIG trouble! They're all comin straight for ya!
