Thread: Where is Combat Balance on the development schedule???

I don't see anything about a combat balance publish on any of the development schedules, nor do I see any posts about it on the In Development forum, or anywhere else where developers post. The combat balance issues were originallysupposed to be addressed in January or February of this year. Is the Combat Balance just vaporware? The combat balance is surelyTHE most important issue for players, so why are the developers only talking about new content and Jedi revamp? Whyisn't any developer talking more than promises aboutthe combat balanceissue? It needs to be on a definite schedule. If it's not, then I doubt we'll see it before 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since June 2004, running one of the game's first completely nonviolent characters. Testing the limits of non-combat MMORPG play and trying to have fun into the bargain (although the developers make it difficult).

Combat is no longer compulsory.

The short answer is: It's not on any schedule and it's totally vaporware.

Testing will begin on a special "sandbox" server shortly after Publish 10. The players on this server will be correspondents and a few dedicated testers. The Combat Balance is indeed scheduled for release in Publish 11.

I'm wondering why it isn't in the Publish 11 notes then? Am I blind, or did I miss it? Because I don't see anything relating to a major overhaul of the combat balance listed there.

I see the notes you are looking at, and it only mentions the GCW revamp. I think they are just categorizing the Combat Balance under the "Combat roles in the GCW" bullet. Publish 11 is when it is currently scheduled though, from what we have heard so far.

  • Publish 9 (going Live tomorrow): Jedi revamp, "Secrets of the Force"

  • Publish 10: FS path revamp, "The Jedi Trials"

  • Publish 11: CB & GCW revamp phase 1

  • Jump to Lightspeed

  • Publish 12: Smuggler revamp? GCW phase 2?

As near as I can tell that's how it will play out anyway. It gets more hazy and uncertain the further you look ahead.

  • Publish 10: FS path revamp, "The Jedi Trials" (release estimated at 8/03)

  • Publish 11: CB & GCW revamp phase 1 (release estimated at 9/14, but I bet it will take weeks longer)

  • Jump to Lightspeed (tentative release date not even given at my local video game store, before Xmas)

  • Publish 12: Smuggler revamp? GCW phase 2? (after the first of the year)

I hope the Phase 1 is only in reference to the GCW and NOT the combat balance. Estimates are based on SOEs previous track record with releasing publishes, roughly 1 every 4-5 weeks, mini-publishes every 2-3 weeks after a major publish.

No offense, but I would feel better about the combat revamp if they would get some of the foaming at the mouth FOTM, template guys to test the new combat system. From the state the game is currently in, it is obvious the the testers that were originally used to test the combat system were ignored or ineffective. Unless the uber 1337 power gamers are used to test the system, the game will migrate back to the fiasco it is now.

All the high end stuff needs to be made available to players, just like they would have access to in live, in order to make the test accurate.

I play Swordsman simply for how it looks. Its not as good as a TK/Fencer, but its got some cool moves as a couple of gorgeous weapons to swing.

I really want to play as a Gunslinging Pistolleer. Don't get me wrong, Roll Shot is cool, but pistoleers have got nothing that reinforces the exciting image that pops into your head when you think of John Woo gunfights, Dante from Devil May Cry, The Matrix, Equilibrium (okay, Equilibrium was poorly done, but the -idea- of Gun Kata looked good on paper), and has anyone played GunGrave?

The moment Pistolleers get Duel Weild and some Fancy Moves (or just one or two!) I would gladly dump all the skills I have and grind to the ends of the earth, becuase then I'll have fun doing it.

I'm enjoying climbing the Swordsman tree at the moment, every times I get a new special its a big thing for me, I rmbr when I first got HeadHit1, its a fvckiing cool horizontal head cut, followed all the way around into a rearfootreverse hook kick. Beautiful. I still used it even though my entire combat approach was centered around Spin2 and Sweep2. I want something just as impressive when I take my matchingpair ofTangle Pistolsout of the bank. Why Tangle Pistols? Becuase they look and sound cool.

Take the blue pill,Ô
Play SWG, never dual-wield your pistols and believe whatever you want to believe.
Take the red pill,Ô
Play MxO, and I will show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

SWG was never the game I wanted it to be, even before the NGE. All the NGE did is take away what gameplay SWG actually did have.

Correspondents in general are pretty powergamish to start with, they simply have to be in order to be drawn to the position. We are lobbying to have free access to all skill trees to test a variety of templates and try to come up with one that "breaks" the system. If we getthe priviledge(and I don't see why not), I'm sure we'll come up with some delightfully devious combinations. You're right that it won't be as true of a stress test as Live, but we'll do our best.
