I quite often get a message along the lines of "you receive 546 points of pistol weapons exp ......" whilst still shooting at my main target. A weaker member of the group has gone down first therefore it works perfectly well for me.

Sorry, I didn't read his sig. Yes, shooting StoppingShot with +91 speedwill hit the cap or come close to it with most weapons.

FanShot is probably your best bet for highest raw damage per second. StoppingShot is too slow at your level to be worthwhile.
