Thread: Pistoleer template options -- let's discuss

Well, I've been reading everybody's opinions on what is the best template involving pistols, both here and on the Bounty Hunter forum. I cannot seem to come to any sort of concensus as to which template is the best--and that is a very good thing in my opinion. It means that people can build their template based on their personalinterests and how they like to play, rather than trying to find a template that is more uber than any other. On the Bounty Hunter forum, I've seen lots of discussion on the relative merits of MBH/MPistol vs. MBH/MCarb vs. MBH/MRifle. Some people swear say MBH/MR is the way to go for dealing heavy damage in PvP. Some people think MBH/MP is best for the crowd control specials. Some people prefer the alternative specials and the added range of MBH/MC compared with MP. One common theme I've noticed is that if you want to fight Jedi, don't be a MP because you'll always be within their attack range. Other than that, I haven't seen much negative talk about Pistols as a useful profession, and I have to agree.

Personally, I have been a hardcore Master Pistoleer since I started playing the game, and was initially very disappointed at the very short range of the new pistols post-CURB. I didn't think I could get used to it and considered changing to Commando or Rifleman. I may still respec to Rifleman and/or Smugglertemporarily to see how they compare, but I must say that after a long grinding session today I am very happy that I am still a Pistoleer. Stopping Shot is awesome (as are several of the other specials), and if I use my battle droid as a tank, it acts like an additional stopping shot, rooting the mob at the droid long enough to position myself at optimum range andfire a leisurely round of specials before it aggros on me. The funniest part of this strategy is that I found (by accident) thatI can give medical enhancement injections to my droid. Those must be some strong syringe needles...

This all brings me to my question... I see lots of talk about MP/MS, MP/MBH, etc., and using the remaining skill points to take up part of another ranged profession (e.g., Rifles or Commando), but I haven't really seen anybody talk about adding Medic as the 3rd partial profession instead of more combat skills. I played around with Medic 0440 (thanks to some tips by BadgerSmaker) and Medic 4040 over the past couple of days, and must say that this seems to be a very useful combo. With the former (0440), I can heal most of my health bar at once by using all the various bacta and stim injections sequentially. This helps not only when I get in trouble in battle, but also to get me ready for my next opponent more quickly rather than having to sit and regen. With the latter (4040), I have Nutrient Injection, which basically lets you buff your own Health without need for any meds, as well as Stabilizers (to clear states). So, I'm just wondering if anybody else has been playing around with Medic skills and if they find it as useful(or more so) compared withadding a few more combat skills.

I've been playing with MP/MDoc/MMed mainly for supporting my guild, however in the little pve testing I've done I've been suprisingly effective. I also like having the option of battle or recon armor. I'm also interested in other's findings.

I had the pre-CU template master pistoleer, bh0040, smuggler 0040 and novice commando. That template was pretty messed up post-CU but I tried it around a little before I respeced. One thing that was slowing me down in PVE was waiting for my health bar to regenerate after each kill (or every two kills) when soloing. I made my first post-CU template MBH, MP, Medic 4040 to bring down the wait times with bacta shots. I think I cut the time in half but medic isn't very useful while fighting anymore (correct me if I'm wrong). Thinking about taking even more pistol skills instead of medic, squad leader skills are really tempting but so are smuggler skills.

Considering mod stats alone (I did compare these carefully recently), I wasn't able to see any advantage of one profession over another, comparing Rifleman, Carbineer, and Pistoleer (I haven't looked at Squad Leader or Smuggler yet). Rifleman gives better offenses, Pistoleer gives better defenses, and Carbineer is a mix of the two, but it does seem balanced to me--whatever you lose in offenses, you gain in defenses (or vice versa), so I guess it's really a matter of what your preferences are. Mods are only part of the equation though--specials are a big consideration too. I don't see any objective way to compare specials among professions though--it depends on whether you like to deal raw damage per shot versus changing the states of your target.

Thanks for your input!

Hmm, I was thinking of giving Master Rifleman a try (just for comparison), but didn't realize that the stance requirements had changed. That's definitely another plus for pistols. As for FS Ranged Speed, I haven't looked into whether that branch was fixed with the CURB. It was definitely broken before (as was Ranged Accuracy). Does anybody know?.

Just a thing, i have see with my testing: all our special are curently usable with any weapon and any posture. Some carbine specail REQUIRE carbine, some rifle specials REQUIRE being prone and so on

I recently dropped 2 boxes of FS Melee speed (a CSR gave me 1 and a half free FS lines without using my banked fxp as part if the reimbursement for Chimaera players after the rollback) and I still have FS Ranged Speed line.

Didn't see any difference in speed after dumping it, but that would only have been +6 speed.

I have four lines of FS, ranged speed and accuracy and melee and ranged defence and enough banked FXP for Jedi Initiate, but I really don't have the time or inclination for all that.

I noticed that Skill stims are fixed now too, and the Pistol Speed stims stack on top of the Doctor combat speed buff.

I also had a go at using a laser rifle to give me some extra range, but weapon switching while in combat is all over the place it seems, sometimes it is instant and other times you can't swap to the pistol at all.

Anyway, what was my point... err... oh yeah.. no definate word as to whether FS Ranged Speed is working or not. It should stack on your "General Ranged Speed" mod, I did check it from my skill sheet but I can't remember if it was evident or not.

For as far as i can see, my pistol speed is at 109 with Ranged Speed 3, so i guess my base is 100, and my FS skills add another 9.

I just looked through the recent posts and stickies on the FS forum, and as far as I can tell, nobody has commented that Ranged Accuracy and Ranged Speed have been fixed. That doesn't necessarily mean that they haven't been, just that I couldn't find any mention of it.

One good comment that somebody made there was that FS defense branches now give you a relatively smaller bonus than they used to. They now apparently only boost your defenses by around 10%, whereas it was 20% pre-CU (roughly, depending on what your current mods are).

Reading this thread, what I am taking away from it is that there seems to be a lot more "useful variety" in the templates that people are picking. There doesn't seem to be a single uber template, as the original posted noted, and that really is a very good thing. Are there going to be templates more suited to certain roles? Absolutely - but that's how it should be. Here's hoping that someone doesn't find the "uber template" and in 3 months we all look the same!
