Thread: A meditiation on Mastery

Hi folks - I made Master Gunfighter over the weekend and well, I'm a little underwhelmed.

Ok I accept that pistoleer needs big luv from the Dev's to live up to it's potential, but the whole mastery thing just doesn't impress me.

Mastery takes a long time and there should be some real buzz in getting it. What I got was another sub par special and an admittedly cool title.

So my question is, my fellow pistoleers, what can be done to make mastery more meaningful?

(DISCLAIMER : At no point can the words dual/duel wield be used!)

I had thought a new weapon cert at master (maybe even the scatter pistol or launcher pistol or a variant?)

This would apply to other combat classes of course - maybe thermoknuckles (heat damage) for Teras Kasi?

Whatcha think?

Make MTPS an area effect shot that hits everything withing 64m, disarming shot 2 a 64m KD and keep its cone of fire (ok maybe that one is a bit too much).

Then you'd be laughing, not crying, when you got those two moves.

With all respect m8, all of this has been discussed over and over again. The devs just don't seem interested. A master pistoleer should be the equal of the other combat masters. We need more speed, def more damage and specialised pistols at master level. I'm working my way up the "onions" atm, and hopefully I'll get there by the combat changes in publish 8. I just pray that the balances we've been talking about are sorted out. Pistoleers have been the poor relation of the combat classes for too long.

There's only so long we can be ignored.

I mastered Pistoleer this w/end just gone as well (taken blinking ages). I note that i am doing hits for over 1000 damage per shot using healthshot2 and a FWG5 sliced 230+max damage (can't remember the exact figure). It's not a continuous stream of 1000+ hits but they do show up a lot, max i've seen was around 1300ish (it started 13xx lol).

This means with the speed modifier now, (the gun is quick also, i'm taking down (mid powered) creatures in secs, as long as they don't have high resists against heat. Move onto the bigger stuff it get's a little more tricky, speciallyas they tend to have higher resists thus become almost impossible to take down.

I still think more speed is needed, and alsoweapons thatprovide higher damage per shot. and maybe something to target the mind pool, instead of the health pool, since i've notice that a lot of creatures seem to have a slightly higher Health pool these days

i've been arguing with a TKA about pistoleer for awhile. he seems to think it requires more skill and discipline to do martial arts than it does to be a pistoleer. that pistoleers hide behing technology while he faces it head-on (i'm assuming VKs and composite armor are not technology)...

if this is the attitude of the community as a whole, dont expect any fixes ever

Yea I definalty think we should get some speed. Where the people who focus on gunfighting, why do bounty hunters get better mods than us?

The very fact that we are not certified to use those above two you mentioned is really a crock. They are both pistols. Not carbines. Not rifles. PISTOLS. Yet we are not certified as a Master to use them.

Don't tell me to dabble in BH if I want to use em. I have heard that lame arguement before. Are there any carbines that a carbineer cannot use? How about rifles that a riflemen is not certified for?

A mastery certification of any or all waepons that are classified as pistols at Master Pistoleer. But that just makesd too much sense.

A naked TKA without VK's stands a better chance of living then a naked pistoleer with a gun in his hands assuming no other skills involved. One of them gets center of being which significantly adds to defensive rolls in addition to a straight out 57% melee damage reduction (not kinetic, melee) right off the bat and the ability to self-buff.

In terms of skills, TKA is generally more complex play compared to pistoleer. Pistoleer combat amounts to bleeds and shot dps.

TKA contents with intimidate, warcry, stuns, blinds, dizzy, posture changes, knockdowns, health pool targeting hits, action pool targeting hits, and mind pool targeting hits. A well skilled TKA player can tune combat sequences for the opponents' weaknesses.

As a Pistoleer/TKA I use my guns at range only as long as it takes for me to close in and break out the kung-fu. The pistols are pretty useless these days. It's been an overwhelming disappointment.

I've also never seen a pocket rocket cert for commando. I guess that kinda means they don't get the shaftlike we do.

Indeed. It goes beyond simple damage output and defense. We simply don't have anything to do. Pick your best special, and spam it.

Comparing reality to a game is a lousy way to justify how powerful a profession should be. They should be equal, but different. Everybody has an right to have fun. We could just as easily say to brawlers "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight" (in fact, we have) and they wouldn't like it either.

I'm working on making us both more effective and more interesting to play.

double post. The higher ups are aware of the forum technical difficulties since they went public again, and are working on it.

We defintely do need to make the profession more interesting to play.

But as far as the part of the message i quoted, "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight" should always apply, any ranged profession should beat the hell out of melee professions at range, just as any melee profession should beat the hell out of ranged professionsin close quarters, thats the only equality that should apply when compairing the apples and oranges which is ranged vrs melee combat. in that way... we are in fact equal but different.

It has nothing to do with reality, it has everything to do with believeability..i can't believe that any karate expert can doge bullets from a marksmen shooting at him 210 ft away long enough to land a punch or kick, anymore then i can believe a pistoleer can pistol whip a three story walking tank to the ground. things like that happen becuase of a poorly thoughtout and implimented rule system. which is not only an insult to the player base intelligence, but also an insult to the world which Mr. Lucas created. Let's not forget this is Science fiction/fantasy. and Scientific facts and theories which relate to the world of Star Wars should be applied, and the laws of Physicsdo apply to this realm.. all you have to do is watch the movies to see for yourself. there is no reason to dumb down a game to make it fun.

"I kind of miss the days when games were judged on their game-playing merit alone. I'm a little concerned about how far we (the game industry) are into the licensed four-page-ad marketing blitz era these days, which may be a natural evolution of the industry. But I'm always worried when we put more emphasis on glitz and production values than on the game. That's a trend that looks good for a while until you realize there's no game industry any more." ~ Sid Meier
