The circle, usually lower part of screen, center, is the ship version of Health. The large BLUE circle is your shield status. As you get hit from the front or the rear this shield circle starts to open up. Inside that is a RED circle. This denotes your armor. After the front or rear shield is depleted, the front or rear armor starts to take dmg.
When you aren't in combat, the shield will recharge itself back to a complete circle, while the armor won't. Armor needs to be repaired at a space station (the "Neutral" stations, not factional stations).

There are 2 "quick" ways to check, one is the radar at the bottom of your screen Kalia mentioned, and the other is to hit (if you haven't changed your keybindings) Ctrl-1. This will target yourself, as AlimightyBob said, and give you a quick glance at what your shields/armor/systems/chassis damage is at.
Neither of these is really specific, just general overviews.
The 2 "longer" methods are the 'V' screen, which details all of your components, their armor/hitpoints/various other stats, and the little bar of icons at the right side of your screen. The 'V' screen can be a little time consuming to go through, as you have to check each component, and roughly calculate what percent it's at, or just glance at all the armor/hitpoint values. The little bar of icons, when clicked on, give you little popups for all the different components and the current percent status of each. Those are the little popups you'll see flashing up when you get disabled, as it's telling you your reactor/engine is now at 0%.
Now, if they'd let us have a little screen that would be on screen all the time with a listing like it has in the Starship Terminal window, I'd be one really happy pilot. Being able to glance and my screen and tell instantly what all of my components were at is something I've wanted for a very long time.

Detailed info on the components screen (V key by default I believe), or percentage readouts on systems and chassis when you target yourself.
